- Comparing Nightlife in Medellin to Cartagena
Every year more foreigners visit Colombia to enjoy the nightlife and the women in this great country. Most of them tend to go to the big cities like Medellin, Cartagena or Bogota.
While there are certainly plenty of places to enjoy nightlife and the dating scene in Colombia, these cities dominant the interest of a lot of foreign men as they increasingly travel to Colombia each year.
Though I live in Bogota and have a preference for the nightlife in this city, both Medellin and Cartagena are decent cities to visit also for nightlife and women.
But which of those cities are better overall? Let’s go over 10 factors to compare both of them when it comes to the nightlife and women to give you a better idea of which one to try.

First: The Women in Medellin
In Medellin, the women in this city are known as paisas. Overall, you will find that the women here are a bit whiter than women in other cities like Cartagena. For the most part, you will find mostly white or mestiza women in this city.
Outside the paisas, you also have plenty of tourists also from other countries. They tend to be mostly white too from what I have seen with some mestiza and black women from other countries that I have seen there also.
When it comes to attractiveness, the paisa women are known in Colombia as the most attractive women in this country. In my experience, they have some of the best faces in Colombia and some of the best bodies also.
One thing that should be mentioned is that plastic surgery has been quite common here. So depending on if you like plastic surgery on a woman, this could be a positive or negative for you personally.
Finally, the women dress very nicely here. During the night, they dress a bit more sexually than women in other parts of Colombia generally. During the day or afternoon, that is less common and less skin is shown mostly because they are not going to a nightclub and Medellin is not very hot.
When it comes to the foreign women you meet in this city, almost all of them that I met were tourists. The ones that are not likely to be tourists are the Venezuelan women.
Now the foreign touristy women are mostly average to decent looking. Nothing to write home about but not bad either.
The Venezuelan women you meet here have appearances similar to a lot of Colombian women. One main difference though is that they tend to be more brown than white. Some of them have plastic surgery also, so it’s not as uncommon with them as it is with other foreign women there.
Second: The Women in Cartagena
In Cartagena, the women here have different demographics generally speaking as you will find a bigger mix of white, black and brown women here. Overall, the women here have darker skin than the women in Medellin from my experience.
When it comes to foreign women, this is another touristy city in Colombia as mentioned before. The demographics and attractiveness of both the foreign and Venezuelan women you see in this city are similar to what you will see in Medellin.
One thing to mention though is that I often encountered more Venezuelan women in Medellin than Cartagena but there are more Venezuelan women in the Caribbean Coast than Medellin as plenty of them go to nearby cities to Cartagena like Barranquilla or Riohacha for example.
Now the local women from Cartagena are quite attractive also. They tend to dress more sexually and showing more skin throughout the day instead of mostly just during the night as Cartagena and the broader Caribbean Coast is very hot.
And when it comes to plastic surgery, the women in Cartagena generally didn’t have as much of it as in Medellin from what I have seen. However, their bodies are still quite good. So if you ant more “natural” bodies, then Cartagena would be better than Medellin but plastic surgery isn’t rare here though either way.
Third: Easiness of Women in Medellin
While the women from Medellin are often regarded as some of the sexiest in Colombia, they are not as easy as women from other Colombian cities like Cali or Pereira.
One of the main reasons for this is that this city has been flooded with foreigners for many years now and many of these foreigners come with the intention to have sex and leave.
For that reason, there is a strong stereotype among some that all foreigners in this city are “sex tourists.”
Even though quite a few do travel here for that reason, others don’t.
Regardless, it will make plenty of women here be more cautious with you and have their guard up when dealing with men – especially foreign men.
Despite that, it isn’t too difficult to get laid in this city but it will take more work than with the women from Cartagena as the “sex tourist stereotype” is not as strong as it is in Medellin.
Now here’s a few tips for this.
First, the paisa women outside of the touristy bars and neighborhoods are going to be easier usually as there are not as many foreign men hanging out in more normal and less touristy neighborhoods.
Second, the touristy women are quite easy given that they are on vacation and more willing to have fun quickly.
Third, you have the Venezuelan women here. They are usually much more open to casual sex at a quicker pace given that they don’t deal with foreigners as much as long as they are not working in professional sex work as some of them do to make a living.
Fourth: Easiness of Women in Cartagena
When it comes to touristy women and Venezuelan women in Cartagena, much of what is true about them in Medellin is quite true also about the ones you will find in Cartagena.
Now with the women from Cartagena, there is a little bit of a “sex tourist” stereotype in Cartagena as it is one of the bigger and touristier cities in Colombia. However, it’s not anywhere near as bad as what you might encounter in Medellin occasionally.
Again, you would be best to go to areas in Cartagena that are normal and safe and not touristy at all to best improve your chances of meeting women that will not likely have that stereotype in their mind.
Between the two cities though, women from Cartagena are generally a little bit easier than the women in Medellin but you could find easy enough a good woman to enjoy the night with in either city.
Fifth: Cost of Going Out in Medellin
One great benefit about Medellin is that public transportation is much better here with the metro system that they have. This makes it where you will need to take a taxi less often than in other cities like Cartagena.
On top of that, I generally feel safer in Medellin than Cartagena so taking a taxi doesn’t feel as necessary versus taking public transportation.
But overall these issues will make it where you spend less money on taxis and getting around in Medellin than Cartagena when enjoying the nightlife.
Now for cover charge, I find it is becoming more common for clubs to be having cover charges than when I first visited Medellin years ago. However, it still isn’t too common so you can easy enough find a place without a cover charge here.
For drinks, you will find beers will cost $2 USD at most usually with drinks costing around $4 USD. If you want a bottle of liquor, you will be spending around $25 to $40 USD at most or more if you go to a fancier place.
Sixth: Cost of Going Out in Cartagena
Now some of the costs for going out in Cartagena have already been covered under the last section.
For example, taxi costs are going to be involved a little more often than when you are going out in Medellin.
Though that isn’t always true given one advantage that Cartagena has in my experience…
Which is that the nightlife tends to be closer together and less spread out than what I have experienced in Medellin. Therefore, it is a little bit easier to walk around in Cartagena from bar to bar (though the difference between the two cities on this issue is not that great).
In my experience here, I also found clubs to more often have cover charges to enter than what I have experienced in Medellin. Cover charges tend to be around $5 to $10 USD so not too bad.
Furthermore, beer and liquor prices are similar to what you seen in Medellin but I often found beer and liquor prices to be more expensive here than in Medellin.
Seventh: Where to Go in Medellin
In my experience, nightlife is not the best way to meet women from Medellin as meeting them online or during the day usually worked better in my favor.
When it comes to meeting women during the night, I found touristy women to be more open to that than any other group.
And for the nightlife itself, Medellin arguably has the best nightlife in Colombia. I personally have a bias for Bogota and would say Bogota is better given I live and like it here more but Medellin is right up there and very strong with nightlife also.
When it comes to areas in Medellin, you should check out areas such as Parque Lleras, Rio Sur, Barrio Colombia and Palmahia.
For bars, my favorite places have been Babylon, Ruana de Juana, Blue Bar, Son Havana, Luxury Club and Bendito Seas.
Eighth: Where to go in Cartagena
Similar to Medellin, you are going to find that women in Cartagena are less receptive to meeting new men at night and tend to go out in groups that are more closed off.
So aside from touristy women, I would recommend you meet local and Venezuelan women during the day or from online and set up dates with them accordingly.
Or as you could also do in Medellin, it would be useful to make local friends here and use that also as a way to meet new women as well if you have enough time in either city.
Now when it comes to location, I recommend going near the Torre del Reloj. This is a famous clock tower in Cartagena that is going to have most of the bars or clubs you would want to go to.
Now some of the bars I recommend you visit include Café Havana, Salsa Quiebra Canto, The Beer Lovers, La Casa de la Cerveza, Mr. Babilla, La Movida, Alquimico Bar, Donde Fidel or Tu Candela.
Ninth: Nearby Women to Medellin
Now when spending time in any Colombian city, I always recommend checking out the closest cities to where you will be for more women to meet.
Sometimes these women will even travel to your city if you are close enough and if they are interested in you enough.
Or you could take a quick trip to where their city is also.
But when it comes to Medellin, I don’t find the options near Medellin to be quite as attractive as what Cartagena has. But it does have some options.
For example, some near suburbs or towns close to Medellin include Bello and Envigado.
Both of these areas have populations of over 500,000 and 200,000 people.
And keep in mind that there are not anywhere near as many foreign men that take the small trip to these places to enjoy the women there even though the demographics and appearances have some similarities to the women in Medellin.
So you will find them to be easier to have sex with but they are slightly bit less attractive than the women in Medellin given that plastic surgery is less common and they don’t emphasize as much working on their appearance as women from Medellin.
But you can’t be disappointed either way with the women from those areas so give them a chance if you got the time.
Tenth: Nearby Women to Cartagena
Now Cartagena is located on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. The main two cities you got as options for women are Barranquilla and Santa Marta.
Also keep in mind that in my experience a woman will travel to meet you if she is interested in you enough but there are limitations.
Of course, if the distance is too big, no woman is going to travel too far.
In Medellin, the distance to either Bello or Envigado is about 15 to 30 minutes more or less depending on traffic and driving conditions.
But the distance between Cartagena to Barranquilla is about 2 hours and the distance to Santa Marta from Cartagena is about 4 hours.
Of course, give or take given traffic and driving conditions.
Now getting a woman from either city to get to Cartagena is going to be more difficult than with the areas recommended for Medellin given the distance is much greater.
For Santa Marta, it’s going to be much more difficult given that a 4 hour trip is a harder sell but it can be done. I have had some women travel over 3 to 4 hours to meet me but it’s not as common.
For Barranquilla, that is more reasonable to pull off. And keep in mind Barranquilla is a bigger city than Santa Marta so you have more women to work with here.
Finally, the women in Barranquilla are going to be more interested in you in my experience than women living close to Medellin. That has been my experience anyway that foreigners tend to have better value there.
On top of that, as said before, you have more Venezuelan women in this part of Colombia overall when you factor in the broader Caribbean Coast.
Final Thoughts – the Verdict
Overall, this is a tough thing to compare.
First, Medellin has better nightlife at better prices, women from nearby areas to Medellin are closer and the women are overall much more attractive.
On the other hand, Cartagena and the Caribbean Coast still has beautiful women that are easier to sleep with and also you have more Venezuelan women to work with also.
Between the two, I personally prefer Cartagena and the Caribbean Coast because I personally like the demographics of the women there a little bit more to my taste and I am also much more familiar with nearby cities like Barranquilla.
But I would argue that the average man would enjoy Medellin overall given it has better value for your nightlife experience and also the city of Medellin is much nicer than the city of Cartagena.
