Are Colombian Women Gold Diggers?

Years ago when I was living in Cali, I was using Tinder to meet up with some women for maybe something casual.

Well, one chick I met was a bit weird. She was overly flirtatious and already throwing out the “te amo” (I love you) within the first hour of matching with her.

And that I am “her one” already and she just knows.

Huh, that’s a lot of confidence!

To my surprise, the conversation takes its course into her eventually asking me to send her some money.

Even though I told her I was living in her city, she must’ve seen me like any of the other foreigners she was sweet talking to in order to make some money.

Now obviously she didn’t get any money from me and we never met….

But that wasn’t the only shady Colombian woman I have met online

In another case in Cali as well, I matched with some chick that was very insistent that our first date be at some expensive restaurant in the city

She would not meet me anywhere else in Colombia except this very expensive restaurant

Now she tried convincing me that it was free or very cheap at first by saying that the restaurant was holding a wine tasting event

But I looked it up and it clearly said that we had to purchase food to taste the free wine samples

And in her words, she don’t want any date with a man that can’t afford to bring her a good time

Now did this woman even have a job? No, she was living in some bad part of town and apparently was a single mother.

So basically is just looking for a fun time on some dumb guy’s wallet.

Well, not me obviously

But those cases are not too rare – they happen occasionally from time to time

And because of bad experiences like that, I have encountered the occasional person from some other country having similarly bad experiences.

In which maybe they get burned and end up accusing all Colombian women of being gold diggers.

If you read online commentary about Colombian women by foreigners, you might come across this opinion occasionally as well.

However, I believe most foreigners that live in Colombia don’t reach this conclusion and I have never heard a Colombian man say that the women in Colombia are mostly gold diggers.

And over the decade of me dating Colombian women, I have met more than the average guy out there.

So in my experience, I can tell you the simple answer is that most Colombian women are definitely not gold diggers. My two bad experiences mentioned above are not representative of most Colombian women.

Now if that’s the case, why is it then that there are a decent amount of foreigners with a strong belief that most Colombian women are gold diggers?

Well, from my observations, there are several reasons. Some of them similar to the stories above but needing more explanation.

So let’s break down some of the main reasons I have personally seen and explain why they are not valid reasons in my opinion.

Reason 1: Greater Emphasis on Providing

In Colombia, things can generally be a little more traditional between men and women.

Now, as I will reiterate throughout this article, not all of Colombia is the same. In places like Bogota, you will find more women that have their own careers and are more comfortable spending money in a relationship.

However, if you go to more conservative cities like Cali, Pasto, Barranquilla or Popayán for example, then you will see this belief that men should pay for everything to be more common in relationships.

Having said that, there are also class differences even in those cities. From what I have experienced, women that come from the upper class in even more conservative cities like Cali are more likely to pursue a more profitable career and feel more comfortable spending money in a relationship.

But from what I have seen, some foreign men run into issues when they enter into a relationship with a Colombian woman that has more traditional attitudes on this topic. Subsequently, a few of them might make the statement that Colombian women are gold diggers.

Perhaps some of them feel that the women they have met were using them for money.

Which, by the way, is actually an issue for some of these men because…

Reason 2: Foreigners Hanging out with Barrio Girls

In this article here, I go into greater detail on what is your typical barrio girl in Colombia.

But essentially you have plenty of foreign men coming to Colombia looking to have a lot of casual sex

And some of these men are not afraid to go into the sketchier neighborhoods if it means some Colombian girl with no money or opportunities and plenty of time on her hands is willing to fuck them.

Simply put, a lot of these barrio girls don’t have jobs or educational aspirations and usually stay at home doing not much. A lot of them have a local boyfriend and maybe a few other guy friends they get casual with.

On top of that, some of these chicks are often single moms looking for some dude to provide for the kid. Well, the local boyfriend who is offering to wash people’s windshields of their cars in front of red lights isn’t making much money.

But you know who is?

The exotic foreigner with the funny accent!

So to nobody’s surprise, some of these chicks that are single mothers basically look at foreigners like easy money.

And either they will get financial help from a guy while he is in Colombia or online in dating websites where they ask for money to help the kid.

Now believe it or not but plenty of these chicks manage to get a few hundred bucks here and there from these guys.

Have multiple guys and that adds up!

In cases like this, I can understand why men who get used by these women would get angry and call them gold diggers.

After all, they are only talking with them because of the potential to get some money for the kid(s)!

But obviously most Colombian women are not in this situation.

And just because a Colombian woman is poor and is a single mother doesn’t mean either she is going to fish attention from foreign men for money.

Just happens to be that this demographic of women is more likely to do that but not all of them are doing that.

Reason 3: Scams

Simply put, there are plenty of scams in this country and sometimes those scams involve beautiful women.

Where a Colombian woman agrees to go on a date with you and manages to get you drugged for example.

Subsequently, your next memories are waking up and realizing a good deal of your money or possessions have been stolen.

Given how much sketchier Colombia can be when it comes to crime and how foreigners can often be easier targets…

It makes sense that these experiences can lead bad tastes for these foreigners

Causing them to get angry and accuse most Colombian women of being untrustworthy

And even throwing out insults like gold digger

Even though a gold digger is something different than a woman trying to drug you because that would be a thief

But in the midst of anger, I have a few of these folks use this as a reason for why they believe Colombian women are mostly gold diggers

Reason 4:  Materialism in Medellin and Cartagena

By far, these are some of the two worst cities I have seen in Colombia when it comes to materialism.

Now to be fair, Bogota also has its fair share of materialism as well so it’s not a perfect place either

But I usually have observed more women from Medellin and Cartagena as being much more materialistic than what I often see elsewhere in the country.

And as often noted elsewhere on this website like in this article here, Medellin is one of the most popular cities for foreigners to visit in Colombia.

Cartagena is as well and so is Bogota

But how many foreigners go outside of many of the bigger and touristier cities in places like Pasto, Ibagué or Popayán for example?

Well, it is starting to become increasingly more common but there is still so much of Colombia relatively unknown to most foreigners as I described in this article here

So when such a high percentage out of all the foreigners visiting Colombia mostly hang out in the cities with the highest degree of materialism….

Wouldn’t some of them leave Colombia thinking that all the women in this country are like gold diggers?

Because in those cities like Medellin or Cartagena, you do have a lot more gold diggers in those places than elsewhere in the country

But those cities don’t represent most of the country and there is so much more to see

It would be similar to if a Colombian went to the US and only spent time in Miami or Los Angeles

And then complained that all of the US as is materialistic as those cities

Regardless, you can still easily enough find a woman in those cities that are not gold diggers

Especially as most women in those cities are not gold diggers – it just happens to be that there are more of them living in those cities than elsewhere in Colombia

Reason 5: Frustration out of being the ATM Machine

One of the final frustrations that foreigners have with living in Colombia or elsewhere in Latin America is being treated like a “walking ATM machine”

Where sometimes it feels like people are using you to milk money out of you in certain situations

And this can apply to women as well when foreigners meet low quality women trying to milk them for money

When this happens, some of these foreigners feel like they are treated like a walking ATM machine and not a real human being

The thing is that most Colombian women don’t treat or view you this way – it just happens to be that some of them do

And in my experience, it is more common to find Colombians treating foreigners this way in more touristy cities where there are more foreigners for these low quality people to target

Outside of the bigger cities that are not as touristy, this becomes less of a problem

And keep in mind that is just one minor tip for those looking to avoid gold diggers in Colombia – live in less touristy areas

But what are some other tips for foreigners to help avoid some of the gold diggers or the women looking to straight up scam or rob you?

Final Thoughts

Overall, these reasons are some of the most common roots to the idea that Colombian women are gold diggers from what I have seen personally

Of course, every foreigner has a different experience here and this article doesn’t claim to have all the reasons for why this idea is sometimes promoted

In summary, it can be said that most Colombian women are not gold diggers because:

  • Having traditional gender values doesn’t necessarily equate to being a gold digger
  • Most Colombian women are not super materialistic gold diggers from the upper class in cities like Medellin nor are they all single mother barrio girls looking for foreign bucks
  • Outside of the bigger cities, much of that materialism is much less notable and quite a few women are not even that materialistic in the bigger cities
  • Being scammed is not the same as a woman treating you like an ATM machine
  • Most Colombian women are not going to view you as an ATM machine even though some of them do

At any rate, the short answer to all of this is a simple no.

Most Colombian women are not gold diggers.

Only in some of the more urban cities like Cartagena or Medellin do you see more of that materialistic culture that helps produce gold digging women.

But even then, when looking at most Colombian women, this will not be an issue for you. Especially if you follow some of the basic tips I provided in this article for avoiding the gold digging women that are in this country.
