Do Colombian Girls Prefer Foreign Men?

Several years ago when I was single, I went on a date while spending some time in Barranquilla.

I went to a normal bar in the city with a Colombian girl that also had Venezuelan nationality. Her name was Gabriela and she was a cute white Colombian girl with a decent body.

While at the back of this bar, we happened to be the only customers there. We ordered a few beers and the waiter went outside to smoke a bunch of cigarettes.

With some salsa music playing, I guess this was one of those nights where I had to practice my average salsa skills.

But when we finished dancing, we saw down on the sofa we were seated at and played that “never have I ever” game.

It doesn’t take too long until she goes “never have I ever kissed an American.”

Well, you can guess where that went.

One kiss led to making out – which led to getting into the back of a taxi where she had her hand down my pants and you would have thought we were going to have sex right there.

Fortunately for the taxi driver, we decided not to cause a scene in the back of his taxi and waited until we got back to my place.

Now is that normal?

Do Colombian girls prefer foreign men?

Well, it’s complicated to a degree.

Because there are positive and negative associations with foreigners in Colombia and so let’s look at that first before we answer that question.

Positive 1: The “Educated Professional” Stereotype

Simply put, there is a certain stereotype that exists that foreign men from the US or Europe are “more educated” and have “more professional careers.”

And it is true that the average American man earns more a lot money than the average Colombian man

Furthermore, we all know that all women do have a preference for men that are better educated and have more professional careers.

No matter how “strong and independent” they are, that is a usual preference you see in just about all women.

So the fact that American men do tend to do better when it comes to formal education and career prospects does give us a slight advantage. 

Positive 2: The Gringo Hunter

This is the type of Colombian woman that seeks out foreign men for whatever reason.

Maybe she is looking for a man that can help provide for her 10 kids

Or perhaps she is looking for an escape to the US or some more developed country

Often they have some big fetish when it comes to foreign cultures (specifically, anything from the US, Canada or England normally)

These women do exist in Colombia and in most of Latin America and they tend to be very easy to get laid with

They are not the highest quality women though and also they do not make up most women in Colombia

In fact, it is somewhat of a stereotype that foreign women from places like Colombia will use foreign men for a passport or easy money

While some do, most won’t

As written about in this article I wrote, there are many reasons why a Colombian woman doesn’t want to live in the US

Most Colombian women are actually very happy in their home country despite its flaws

It just happens to be though that there are some women here known as “gringo hunters” that are very interested in foreign men and the country they come from

Positive 3: Machismo

In my years of dating Colombian women, I have occasionally heard some say that foreign men are not “machistas.”

Now machismo is often associated with having, according to Urban Dictionary, a “unusually high or exaggerated sense of masculinity” and “the belief in the right to dominate and control, including, but not limited to, control over women.”

In a practical sense, it basically comes down to a lot of the sexism that Colombian women experience from Colombian men

Especially as Colombian society is a bit less PC in general

So there is this belief that foreign men are not like that – which, to a degree, is true

Even though there are foreign men out there like that, there are plenty that come to this country that represent well foreign men to Colombian women

And word gets around ultimately

I wouldn’t say though this is the biggest positive that foreign men bring to the table – it’s more of a minor one that I occasionally have heard from Colombian women

Positive 4: Better Height

To be fair, this might not be the biggest reason why foreign men tend to do better with Colombian women.

However, at my height, I have noticed that I tend to be a little bit bigger than the average Colombian man

Especially in parts of Colombia like Pasto where men really start to seem a bit smaller when compared to other parts of Colombia

But either way, I have been complemented for my height oddly enough even though I have never had that happen in the US from what I can remember

Either way, there is a slight association I have seen with foreign men being seen as a little bit taller among some of the Colombian women I have met

Of course, not all Colombian women think this but it’s common enough that I believe it does give us a slight advantage overall

Positive 5: Influence of American Culture

Whenever I tell my family that Colombia has “xyz” – usually something we have back home – they can’t believe me

The truth is that American culture and its businesses have a strong influence around the world

If you go outside, you will see American fast food restaurants to hearing American music being played in nightclubs easily

Now ask yourself, how often do you hear music being played in nightclubs from artists that live in Russia, China, India, etc

Not very often if ever

Or when you turn on the TV and you see American shows being played or some American movie

This is another minor advantage that does benefit foreigners from specifically the US in this case

It does, from what I have seen, add a certain amount of a “cool factor” to being from the US

Though I don’t want to overemphasize it – it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things and not something you will notice until many years living down here

And even when you do notice it, it’s not very significant. It only helps a little bit.

Positive 6: Foreign Exotic Appeal

In Colombia and other parts of Latin America, being from another country has a certain exotic appeal to it.

Even in the US, being from England probably gives British dudes a slight foreign appeal for being different and having a different life story to tell

Same with being a foreigner in Colombia but I would say that Colombian women are even more intrigued by a foreigner than American women are by some random British dude

In part because the US simply gets flooded with a lot more foreigners than Colombia does

And some parts of Colombia have basically no foreigners to them, so you can really have a stronger foreign appeal there

Just like with that chick I mentioned earlier in this article that told me that she “never kissed an American before.”

Well, somebody had to introduce her to a new experience and I guess it was my turn

And if you show up to Colombia, you might find yourself in a similar position where your foreign status from a more developed country does give you some foreign exotic appeal

Of course, it also depends on where you are and the economic class of the girl we are talking about.

If the girl is from a city like Medellin or Bogota, the foreign exotic appeal is less strong than it is with chicks from Barranquilla, Pasto, Pereira, Cali, etc

And if the girl is more upper class, it has even less appeal because she is more likely to have traveled abroad and met foreigners in places like Miami

But even if you met a upper class girl from Medellin, your foreign status still has a slight “cool” factor to it but less so than with a chick who is middle class from Cali

Positive 7: Easier to Impress Financially

As mentioned before, foreign men are associated with being more educated and having better professional careers

The reality is that we do bring in more money than the average Colombian working a job that pays $300 to $500 USD a month

So with that said, I have met Colombian girls that have said that they like foreign guys because they are more fun

That we are able to have a better time at night to some bar or whatever else

Now this doesn’t mean that you need to spoil these chicks and spend a ton of money before sex to “have a good time”

Simply taking her to a bar and buying her two to four beers is more than a certain amount of Colombian dudes would spend

Now of course there are Colombian dudes that can afford that fine but many can’t afford to buy several beers for multiple chicks in a month

While there have been plenty of foreign dudes who have showed up, spent more money than just even 4 beers worth and that has given us a reputation anyway

A reputation of having more money to spend and being someone who can bring a more fun night before heading to a private place

All around more exciting for the girl

Positive 8: Being White

Now does being white also bring an advantage to foreign men who are white dating Colombian women?

In part – yes.

You are often seen for example as more attractive for having whiter skin. I have had more than enough cases where a Colombian woman would comment on how pale I was and call me very handsome.

The truth is that there is a general association a lot of Colombians have between “white” and “handsome.”

Not saying it is a good thing but it is something that happens down here.

Overall, it does help but it also depends on where you are too

For example, in Cali, it helps a lot more than in Bogota where there’s so many white locals that it doesn’t serve as much of a benefit if you are white.

On top of that, being white itself or a white foreigner isn’t going to get you laid obviously. It just happens to give you an advantage to a degree in the dating market down here.

Negative 1: Can’t Speak Spanish

Now it’s not all positives when it comes to foreign men. There are some negative associations also.

The first one that comes to mind is the belief that foreigners don’t speak Spanish.

This is a minor negative overall because it only requires you to open your mouth and speak Spanish to prove her wrong.

And given that so many Colombian women assume you don’t speak Spanish, it actually helps you a lot when you prove that you do. It will be more impressive to her.

But until you prove her wrong, it is a negative association that makes Colombian women a little bit less interested in foreign men.

Negative 2: Amor del Verano

One time when I was living in Barranquilla, I had a girlfriend that I took to a beach near Santa Marta.

This was way back in 2008 more or less when my Spanish was a lot worse.

Anyway, while on this beach, we meet some folks and there was this one Mexican chick at the beach who was in a bad attitude

She put her phone in a plastic bag and thought she could somehow take photos underwater without it having a problem

Well, it had a problem and she was irritated

Anyway, my girlfriend at the time is talking with her and also explains that we are dating in the conversation

This Mexican girl, without me knowing because I didn’t catch it, assumed that we were an “amor del verano.”

Basically some summer love fling.

Now this is another slight negative association that Colombian women don’t like to deal with when dating with a foreigner.

It’s the assumption that whatever love or relationship you have with a foreigner is not very serious

It’s just a summer fling because surely the foreigner will go home, right?

Well, not in my case anyway – over 10 years and counting down here!

But it clearly annoyed my girlfriend when she told me about it afterwards.

It’s something that some girls don’t like being assumed about that their relationship isn’t very serious.

Again, it’s not a big thing to worry about or a very negative association but it doesn’t help from what I have seen dating down here.

Negative 3: Sex Tourist Stereotype

Similar to the last negative association, this one is similar in a way.

It’s where the girl assumes you are just here to have sex with a bunch of Colombian women and leave back to your home country

But this is when she assumes it of you

Now, as written about here, this is a much more common belief in Medellin than anywhere else

And as I wrote about in this other article, there are ways to get around this negative stereotype

In order to convince her that you are more serious

Either way, it’s a common negative association you might have to deal with when dating in Medellin and is one of the more serious ones I can think of.

Negative 4: Some Xenophobia

This is another negative aspect of dating down here that you might have to deal with but it strongly depends on where you are.

In most of the areas of Colombia that foreigners go to, this probably will not be an issue.

Almost guaranteed it won’t be.

But it could be.

First, you have some areas of Colombia like Riohacha or some of the much smaller cities near the border of southern border of Ecuador where xenophobia is a little more common

You will also be more likely to find it in the Amazonas area of Colombia but it’s very unlikely you are ever going there unless you go to Leticia

But if I have to think of another negative you might encounter, this would be one.

Though it’s quite limited in area and the areas where it’s more common are areas you are less likely to visit anyway.

But to be fair – there is some extra xenophobia in the areas mentioned in my experience. So it doesn’t help if you ever plan on dating women in those areas.

Though most women even in those areas will be cool with you – it’s just that there’s more xenophobia to deal with than normal really.

Final Thoughts

Looking at all of this, I guess it can be answered then – do Colombian women prefer foreign men?

Well, I wouldn’t say necessarily prefer.

It’s not like Colombian women are sitting at home waiting for a foreign dude to come by and take them away.

And if I asked the average Colombian woman who she preferred – a foreign dude or a Colombian dude of equal looks and status….

Well, I’m guessing she would probably prefer the Colombian dude but I could see many that would go with the foreign dude also because he also brings a certain exotic appeal to some.

But the Colombian dude speaks Spanish and understands her culture more and is less likely to return home in her eyes

So it’s a wash – depends on the woman.

A better way to look at this question is from a different angle I believe – does being a (sometimes white) foreigner make it very easy to get girls in Colombia?

Well, as said before on this website, it’s not going to get you laid by itself.

If you are a 50 year old dude who is fat and ugly with no social skills or no Spanish, then you are probably not going to get laid with hot women down here

While other folks might blow smoke up your butt and tell you that you can “conquer” all the hot models here, we both know it’s not true

For you to get laid with very attractive and young women here, you have to bring something more to the table than just being a white foreign dude

Think about it – if a 50 year old white dude from the France showed up to the US with no social skills, fat and no English…

Would he get laid with hot American women?

Be honest.

No.

Now if you do speak a little bit of Spanish and you got some social skills and if you are not ugly…

Then yes, most likely you can get laid here with women hotter than your own country

But that’s because you bring a little more to the table at least. In order to get laid, there is no easy solution here.

No one night trick like getting on an airplane to Colombia.

It involves hard work in self-improvement and being the best you can be.

And when you mix the best version of yourself with the foreign exotic appeal that you get in Colombia, then you absolutely can get hot women in this country.
