Influence of Social Media in Colombian Dating Culture

Before I met my girlfriend, I went on a date with a Colombian girl named Gabriela

She was originally from Cali – a tall, black Colombian woman that was decent looking overall with nice eyes also

This was our second date where our first date went very well and led back to my place where we had some fun

Overall, I really enjoyed our first date together and agreed to take her this time to a bar at night for our second date

But this time things were a little bit different

While on the first date she was very nice, friendly and very interested in me

This time she was entirely focused on her phone

No eye contact, very cold behavior and responding to everything I am saying with one word answers without engaging in the conversation at all

Turns out she was on her phone looking at her Instagram

And I could tell within the first 30 minutes of the date that this was going to be a waste of my time

Even if she had some issue to address in the moment, it is still disrespectful to act disengaged during a date as she was wasting my time ultimately

On a date where I bought her a drink and was giving her my time

So I figured if this was the way the date was going to be, I’d rather just end it

Especially as I tried to figure out what was going on and she was simply being uncooperative in the date and not really explaining her very different behavior

So I decided to call the waiter over, get the check and finish my drink very quickly

She didn’t protest or ask why the date was over

And so we got up and I could see she was still on her Instagram as we were walking to a street where we would go separate ways

It seemed like she was checking out some photos of an account of some chick she followed

So not sure what her issue was that night but I guess you could say that Instagram was its own guest to our date

Since it took all her time away from our scheduled night together!

But is this type of behavior common in Colombia?

Does social media have a really bad influence on Colombian women?

Well, I have gone on plenty of dates with Colombian women since I started spending time in this country since 2006

Back then, social media was much less notable down here than it is now

Just in over a decade, it definitely has increased its influence on the dating scene in this country

From what I read recently online, even Facebook has been trying to test a new dating app in Colombia that you can read about here

But with all of that said, I will say for the most part that social media and dating apps don’t have anywhere the effect that they have had in the dating scene in the US or Canada even

However, let’s get a deeper look into this issue on the statistics and positives and negatives of the influence of social media and dating apps in Colombia

The Basic Statistics of Social Media Use in Colombia

In Colombia, it is true that there are plenty of people that use Instagram and Facebook for example

According to this website here, about 62.05% of Colombians have Facebook and 12.15% of Colombians have Instagram

Now according to this other website here, women make up the majority of Colombian Facebook and Instagram users

So it seems overall that Facebook is much more popular than Instagram

Now when it comes to things like Tinder, I have also seen enough women use it in places like Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Cartagena or Barranquilla for example

However, once you go into cities that are a lot less touristy, you will notice that there are a lot less Colombians using Tinder

That isn’t to say that nobody uses it but that online game wouldn’t be as strong in a place like Pasto for example

So that also brings up another important point that you will usually see stronger social media and dating app influence in the biggest and more urban cities than the smaller cities in Colombia

Now let’s get into the positives and negatives of all of this

The Positives of Social Media Influence in Colombia

Starting with the positives…

First, more social media and dating app influence does make it easier in some ways to get laid in this country

Before you even arrive to Colombia, you can get the numbers of chicks from Tinder or even Instagram

And then develop a more personal relationship with them before you arrive and perhaps even have one wait for you at the airport

Making it easier for you to hookup even on the day you arrive to this country and plenty of times after

And overall, I find that social media and these dating apps do make it overall much easier to get laid

So nothing wrong with that necessarily!

On top of that, it makes it easier to retain these chicks that you hookup with in your life and have them come visit you again whenever you two can arrange something again

The Negatives of Social Media Influence in Colombia

As mentioned in the beginning of the article, it was annoying when my date couldn’t keep her eyes off her phone

Now that doesn’t happen really in Colombia in my experience

I have seen more women in the US go on dates or spend time with their family at a restaurant without being able to stay off the phone

Which is much less common in Colombia but can happen occasionally

On top of that, it can also be argued that also social media and dating apps do ruin to some degree your efforts as a man to find a faithful partner in life

Why is that?

Because when hookup culture is much stronger, it is much harder to find a woman that is more traditional and conservative and who hasn’t been with too many guys

Additionally, you will have some women in Colombia that are attention seekers and only using social media and dating apps for attention only

Which can be annoying when you are dealing with them

Now when it comes to these last two issues, they are mostly relevant for the most urban cities like Cartagena, Bogota or Medellin

It isn’t even that bad from what I have seen in places like Barranquilla, which is also relatively big

And when you get to cities like Pasto, Popayán or Riohacha for example…

Well, social media and dating apps have much less influence overall and don’t bring as many of those negative consequences as strongly

On top of that, you have other negatives of social media that are much stronger in the three cities mentioned above than in most other parts of Colombia

For example, it’s much more common to see prostitutes using Tinder in Medellin than it is in other cities of Colombia

Additionally, you also have really thirsty guys from all the over the world increasingly going after Colombian women

Perhaps because they have read information on this website or elsewhere

And obviously that does increase the competition to sleep with these women and makes it harder for everyone involved

But again, that mostly is something that is more of a concern in places like Medellin or Cartagena

And isn’t as bad even in other big cities like Cali or Barranquilla

Though residents in those areas might argue that things are changing there also – but it’s not as bad as it is in Medellin yet from what I know

Of course, again, outside all of these bigger cities, you will see the effects of this to be much less pronounced

And of course, none of these negatives mentioned are anywhere near as bad as what you have with the influence social media and dating apps in the US or Canada for example

In short, you shouldn’t worry too much about the impact of social media or dating apps in Colombia as of right now

In 20 years or maybe less, it might be much more of a notable issue to talk about where it might even resemble how bad it is in the US as of right now

So don’t worry too much about any of this for the current day and make sure to enjoy your trip to Colombia

Where you have plenty of sexy Colombian women to enjoy dating

And where most of them are not like the woman mentioned in the beginning of this article

Final Thoughts

So even though there are some negative trends appearing in a few select cities in Colombia, it’s overall not anywhere near as bad as the US and much less notable in the non-touristy cities
