15 Factors to Decide Where to Settle with Your Colombiana

For those thinking of settling down with a Colombian wife and not just hooking up..

There are some big questions you are going to have to ask yourself eventually

For example, where should you two live if you decide to get married and have a family with a Colombian woman?

This is a topic covered in other ways in this article where I discuss the characteristics she would need to be able to live in your home country.

Also, over the years of living in Colombia, I have met numerous other men that have gotten married to Colombian women

There was one guy I wrote about in this article that got married and brought his wife to his home country.

However, given family issues, they ultimately had to move back to Colombia to raise their family down here.

So let’s briefly cover some of the 15 different factors you should consider when deciding where you should settle down and raise a family with your Colombian woman.

Factor 1: Divorce Rates

As mentioned in another article, divorce rates are much lower in Colombia than they are in the US

From what I have seen online, the divorce rate in Colombia is about 9%

While they seem much higher in the US at close to 50%

Then there are numerous other countries where divorce rates are higher or sometimes even lower

If you come from Chile for example, it might be that divorce rates are more favorable there than in Colombia

But it does seem based on the information online that Colombia is one of the best countries for a low divorce rate in the world

And if you want to understand those divorce rates better, check out this article I wrote on the subject

Now that isn’t perfect either because there is a lot of infidelity in this country also and plenty of people separate instead of divorce down here as well

So make sure to read this article on infidelity in Colombia that I wrote for knowing which places in the country have less infidelity based on my experience

But in short, I would say this is a win for Colombia

Factor 2: Cost of Divorce

Now I am not an expert in divorce in Colombia since I never got divorced here nor anywhere

And this is a touchy and sad topic to bring up when considering where to get married but it does need to be brought up

Because in the real world, sad stuff like this does happen

Now I wrote another article in much more detail on comparing the cost of divorce in the US versus Colombia if you want to take a look

But to summarize, the cost of getting divorced is much lower in Colombia than in the US and your assets can be much better protected.

So when compared to the US, Colombia is a better choice to get married in.

Compared to other countries? Tough to say. But the cost of a divorce in Colombia is all around cheap and your assets can be well protected if you are a foreigner regardless.

So another point for Colombia.

Factor 3: Hookup Culture

In the US, hookup culture is quite stronger than what you see in Colombia generally speaking

However, there are parts of Colombia that have a lot of hooking up like Medellin, Bogota, Cali, Pereira, etc

So it’s not all rainbows and innocence down here either

Now the thing with this is that obviously you don’t want to be married to a woman in a culture that encourages infidelity, hooking up, etc

With hookup culture, it’s more common to find women that are jaded and not marriage material

With infidelity, you got plenty of it in both the US and Colombia

However, there are parts of Colombia, as I wrote about in this article here, where infidelity is not as much of an issue relatively speaking

Parts of Colombia that are much better than any part in the US

So overall, I would have to give this to Colombia in general but by just a little.

Given how much infidelity is in both countries, neither one is ideal for this factor but I believe Colombia is overall better

In large part because there are areas where you can have a faithful and traditional wife in a culture that doesn’t encourage hooking up and infidelity

Factor 4: Culture of Gender Relations

In the US, there is the issue of gender relations between men and women

Simply put, gender relations are much more toxic all around where men and women look at each other with distrust

On top of that, men are often illustrated in the mainstream media as being villains, untrustworthy, predators, useless, bums, etc

So how would it be like having a marriage in a culture that encourages this distrust between the sexes and also paints men to all women (including your wife) as bad or useless people?

Now if your wife truly loves you, it probably won’t be an issue obviously

But a culture does greatly influence people

And I have met couples in the US where the wife outright disrespects the dude and sees him as useless actually

That seems a lot more common in the US than Colombia

So in short, Colombia seems better when factoring in this issue

Factor 5: Difficulty of Leaving Home

As mentioned in another article I wrote here, leaving your home country to live somewhere else can be difficult

For you and her

So it really depends here on which of you is more comfortable living somewhere else

I can’t say for your individual circumstances but I will say that Colombian women tend to seem less prepared for it than the men here

In part because one the foreign men I have seen here have already traveled to a new country – Colombia!

On top of that, the family unit is much stronger and intact here and so living even 5 or 6 hours away from family is less common in Colombia than in the US

Where it’s much more normal for people to live in another state many hours away

In short, it’s more likely that it would be better for you to live in Colombia instead of her living in the US because you are more likely to be used to it

However, I won’t say if this factor leans more to living in the US or Colombia because it really depends on your specific circumstances

Factor 6: Money

This is most likely an obvious factor that points to living in the US

Simply put, you can earn more money in the US than in Colombia

And she can probably earn more money in the US than in Colombia as well

Jobs in the US simply pay a whole lot more than jobs in Colombia that offer $300 to $500 USD a month

Which is peanuts in the US

But there is another factor to consider along with this one…

Factor 7: Cost of Living

While you can earn a lot more money in the US, it is also much cheaper to live in Colombia

There are many benefits to this – rent is cheaper, no need for a vehicle, food is cheaper, etc

On top of that, there can even be certain tax benefits that you can take advantage of as well

That’s not to say everything is cheaper but most of the monthly expenses will be

Which also brings another benefit by the way – simpler living

Where if you have a decent online income or some form of supporting yourself, you won’t have to work very hard once you are established

You can work fewer hours and when you want with no boss

And not have to worry about how you are going to pay the high bills

So in short, living in Colombia can really be advantageous here

However, I’m not going to say this factor necessarily argues that you should be living in Colombia

Because it really depends on how much money you are giving up from working in the US

After all, it is possible to be earning over 6 figures in the US or even 7 figures if you are talented enough

So this is really another factor where it depends on your circumstances

Factor 8: Safety

In short, Colombia can often seem much more dangerous than the US

This is something you should consider obviously as to where you should live.

In the US, police also do their jobs much better in defending the public and it’s easier to get a gun in some states and defend yourself as well

Though, to be fair, there are some places in Colombia where safety is much better so it’s not bad here everywhere you go

But in short, I’d give this factor to living in the US.

Factor 9: Opportunities for Children

If you are raising your child in Colombia on a decent income that pays in US Dollars, you can provide plenty of opportunities for your children.

However, if I am being fair, jobs in Colombia are simply not as strong as jobs in the US.

And the education system is much better in the US also.

In short, the US is all around a much better place in terms of offering opportunities for your child to succeed in life.

However, given you would likely live in a more privileged lifestyle in Colombia, your child can definitely take advantage of great opportunities there also

And your child would most likely get US citizenship and speak English

So if your kid wanted to live in the US at a later point in life, it would be much easier

Because of this, I’d say I’m more neutral on this factor. I’d overall lean more to the US here but your kid can do very well being born in Colombia with US citizenship and the money you can provide there.

Factor 10: Privacy Concerns

In Colombia, it’s much easier to protect your privacy than it is in the US.

In the US, it always feels like everybody is trying to collect information about you so they can sell it to some company

Or maybe the government is trying to collect information also as they do sometimes

That isn’t to say cases like that don’t happen in Colombia but overall efforts to collect data about you are much less aggressive and developed in Colombia

In this country down here, it’s much easier to protect your privacy overall in Colombia.

Factor 11: Knowing Your Roots

One issue to consider when raising a child in Colombia is if your child knows his or her roots or not.

Now this isn’t much of an issue because you would be teaching your family history to your child and also English

However, by living in Colombia, it would simply be more work to do so.

Because your own family doesn’t live in Colombia most likely and you would have to take the time to teach your child the family history and its language while living in a completely different country

That’s fine and can be done without problem – but is more work.

So keep that in mind when deciding which country to settle down in.

Factor 12: Gun Rights

As hinted at before, gun rights are a factor I consider to be important to consider.

After all, you want to properly defend you and your family, right?

Now in Colombia, you can technically own a gun but it requires a bunch of red tape

Just enough red tape that someday I hope to eventually cover this topic in greater detail since it deserves its own article

Anyway, it can be difficult to say the least.

While in the US, gun rights are a bit more relaxed (depending on state) and also the culture in the US generally provides much more emphasis on the right to own guns.

So this is a factor that favors the US without any doubt.

Factor 13: Traditional?

In Colombia, society is overall much more traditional as hinted at before.

Men are men and women are women.

There is no gender war occurring at the scale it does in the US and gender norms are much better enforced overall.

So if you are interested in finding a more traditional woman to settle down with, it would be easier down here.

On top of that, you also want to live in a culture that encourages more a traditional lifestyle.

After all, it’d be harder to have a successful marriage if the culture of the village encourages bad values

In Colombia, that’s much less of an issue in some parts of the country like Pasto for example

Factor 14: Time with the Kids

In the US, everyone is spending so much time working and barely any time at home with the kids.

I remember when I was raised that both of my parents had to work very hard and long hours to support the family.

Something I’m appreciative of to be sure

And now that I get older and consider having kids myself someday, I think what type of father I would want to be

For me, I work at home because most of my income comes from online

And one of the benefits of living in Colombia is that it is a bit easier to provide for a family with an online income given how cheap it is here

So that is one factor that I like about Colombia is that working at home makes it easier to spend more time with the kids

Where both the mother and I can spend more time and give the kids a more memorable childhood while still being able to support them well

Factor 15: If you Like Colombia or the US More

This is a very obvious factor to consider but it needs to be said.

So many foreigners come to Colombia basically only looking for pussy or the cheap cost of living and that’s it

While some hating everything else about the country with a burning passion of fury

Though Colombia is far from perfect, there are many things I enjoy about this country and its culture

For me, I believe you have to personally enjoy living in the country and have something about it and its culture that draws you in

That makes it much easier to live here overall

Without that, I would heavily consider living in the US instead

Final Thoughts

Given that I am in a serious relationship with a Colombian woman right now and have been for some time…

I guess it should be asked – what would I do in this situation?

Well, someday I might actually get married in the future and it has been something I have talked about with my Colombian girlfriend

Ultimately, we are both settled on the idea of raising a family in Colombia instead of the US

Especially when considering the factors above

However, there are likely to be a million other factors that this article didn’t consider

Many of them being very personal to your specific situation in life – which is different for every one of us

So consider some of the points made here in this article but also keep your personal factors in mind also

For example, would you even be comfortable living in Colombia? Would you even like living in this country?

It might be that you end up hating living in Colombia for some reason and that is perfectly fine.

So consider your own needs as well when making this decision.

In the end, hope you enjoyed this article.
