- 10 Cultural Challenges with Dating a Colombian Woman
While Colombian women tend to be very feminine and beautiful, it should be remembered that they are not perfect as there can be cultural challenges with dating a Colombian woman
Anybody who tells you so is just lying to you
Because there is no such thing as a perfect woman or a perfect anything really
Everybody and everything has its flaws
And after having lived in Colombia for quite some time now, I actually have seen men get tired of some of the cultural challenges with dating a Colombian woman
And as a result, they give up on their dream of living in Colombia and just go back home
Either because they got tired of just having casual sex down here or they got tired of some of the common cultural challenges of dating a Colombian woman
So while most men that I have known who have traveled to Colombia are very happy with the women overall, some aren’t
And before you travel to Colombia to enjoy the women here and everything else Colombia has to offer, it’s important to be familiar with some of the common flaws that you might experience when dating them
So here’s 10 common cultural challenges with dating a Colombian woman from what I have often seen be to be true here
Flaw 1: Shows Up Late
As mentioned in greater detail in this article and another article on this website, Colombian women tend to show up late to a date and just be flakey in general
Usually the will show up sometime between 5 to 15 minutes late
Or 30 minutes if something comes up
Or an hour if you have very bad luck that day
And over the years of living here, this is often one of the biggest complaints foreigners have – why can’t they just show up on time?
It’s just the way it is – they often don’t
Flaw 2: General Language & Cultural Difficulties
This is not so much a flaw in Colombian women but more of a general difficulty you will have
For one, her English might be nonexistent and your Spanish might be relatively poor
As a result, you two will have general language difficulties from time to time – just happens
Though fortunately you can begin learning Spanish for free with Duolingo
And if you want to improve your Spanish, try using this useful textbook or this phrasebook to help you get started. If you still have trouble with Spanish after that, having a translator for your dates with Colombian women can also be helpful
And also there might be just general cultural differences that make you confused – such as her showing up on time or her thinking that Colombia is the best country in the world
Later when you two are married, her parents might get old and sick and have to move in with you into your home – and you can’t understand why they can’t go to a nursing home
Or any other cultural difference that might happen that causes general confusion as she does or says something that doesn’t make sense to you
Or you say or do something that doesn’t make sense to her because it’s normal wherever you are from
So just keep in mind that difficulties from linguistic or cultural differences will occur occasionally
Flaw 3: Wants to Send Money to Her Parents for No Reason
This is more of an issue for when you two are married
Because when married with someone, you two have to be in agreement with finances and what to spend money on
In her case, it’s common enough for a Colombian woman to want to send money back to her parents even when they don’t need the money and are not having any difficulty whatsoever
So why does she want to send money back?
Because her parents raised her and she wants to give back to them
I have seen foreigners get very confused about this – don’t her parents have their own money after all?
And in worst cases, she might even want to have some of your own money from your paycheck to be sent to them
Which then causes a lot of disagreement obviously
So just check up with her on how she views this issue before you ever marry a Colombian woman since not all are like this
Some are and you want to make sure you two are not in disagreement over this issue before marriage
Flaw 4: Her Jealously
As mentioned elsewhere on this website, Colombian women also tend to be relatively more jealous than what you are used to with women in the US or elsewhere
In this case, you are going to need to tolerate some of this behavior but also more importantly put some firm boundaries to make sure that her jealously isn’t too much
Flaw 5: Nationalism & Arrogance
Compared to other Latin American countries that I have known, Colombia tends to have a little bit more nationalism than normal
And so when dealing with a Colombian woman, she might say things about how Colombia is the greatest country in the world or something similar
To some, this is not a big deal – if that’s her opinion, then whatever. Everyone is entitled to an opinion even if the opinion is wrong
However, some might find this belief to be annoying to listen to so keep in mind that some Colombian women are like this
Flaw 6: Lack of Interest in Any Serious Conversation
Again, not all Colombian women are like this but it’s common enough in this country that it needs mentioning
Which is that it can be difficult to just have a normal conversation on any larger or more important topic
One of the reasons for why this is the case is perhaps because Colombian women are simply less likely to be interested in the news or talking about anything of real importance
Though it varies by where you are in Colombia – in some parts like Bogota, the women are more interested in having these conversations
Flaw 6: Money Issues
It has become very common for foreigners to say that “all Colombian women are gold diggers.”
In large part because the women here are truly more materialistic and classist than what you are going to see in other countries
There’s no doubt about that
On top of that, plenty of Colombian women have misconceptions about much wealth a typical American has
Where they might assume that you just have endless amounts of money and can send as much as you like
Which, while you definitely have more money than the average Colombian most likely, that doesn’t translate to being Mr. Millionaire
So that difference between what she thinks you are comfortable spending versus what you can actually spend can cause tension due to that misconception she has
Overall, I wouldn’t call Colombian women “gold diggers” as most are not
Even though the amount of gold diggers in this country is higher than in most countries I have been to, it’s definitely not every woman here
Most are normal people who are not looking to take advantage of you financially but some of the money issues mentioned above can cause tension
So just keep that in mind in regards to these issues coming up and also to avoid any real gold diggers you might come across here
Flaw 7: Lack of Ability to Understand Sarcasm
This issue is more common with paisas (women from Medellin) than anywhere else in Colombia
But if you are a guy who likes to use a lot of sarcasm, just keep in mind that it’s quite possible that much of it will go over her head
In large part because paisas tend to be more direct and don’t use as much sarcasm in general
Flaw 8: Her Insistence on Taking a Taxi or Uber
When dating Colombian girls, you will notice that some prefer to take a taxi or an uber all the time
Public transportation just isn’t good enough for her as she might be a little more materialistic
Or she might be trying to trick some money out of you as mentioned in another article I wrote on here
Overall, this can be an issue since you might not want to pay for taxis all the time
Flaw 9: Tolerance of Low Quality Service
One difference between Americans and Colombians is that Colombians are more accustomed to things just not working properly
The public transportation not working, having to wait in long lines, customer service being really bad or whatever else
As a foreigner in Colombia, this will be a major issue you will deal with as it will appear that most things here are run inefficiently
And on that note, it might confuse you as to why she is so tolerant of things not working properly
It’s just the way it is down here and is one thing you will have to accept
Flaw 10: Family Issues
As mentioned, there are some common family issues you might have to deal with – such as her sending money to her parents for no reason or her wanting to move the family into your home
However, there are a few more issues that might come up
First, you might be treated as a rare creature from another planet by her family – in that they have never seen a foreigner before and will not be sure how to interact with you
They might assume you don’t speak Spanish and go to her to answer something even when you clearly do speak Spanish
They might make other assumptions about you that are false and are based from what they have seen on TV
On top of that, there might even be religious issues – she might insist that you tell them that you are Catholic (even if you are not) so that they are happier with you
Now I have not done that — I am always honest about not being Catholic and it has never caused issues
But she will always insist that you tell them that when you meet them out of fear that they might not accept you
Either way, family can be complicated in Colombia like in anywhere else and these are just a few of the issues you might deal with
Overall
In the end, most of these issues are quite small in comparison to the benefits of dating a Colombian woman – her femininity, beauty, sweetness and more
