Story 9: Tinder Scams in Colombia

Every once in a while someone I know might mention how they don’t like online dating — mainly because of all the news about Tinder scams in Colombia and elsewhere

In fact, I read in the newspaper just recently about how some chicks will go on dates with guys to drug their drinks and steal their stuff later

Apparently it’s becoming more common with more Tinder scams in Colombia

Moreover, whenever I return to the US, I occasionally come across fake profiles on there also

Where someone pretending to be a chick will say she wants some “fun” but needs to confirm you are a real person

In which she will send you a link afterwards to some website where you need to put your credit card info and other personal details to “confirm” you are real

When you see something like that, you have to wonder – how many idiots fall for something like that?

Who knows

Either way, I’m not going to lie to you and say there is no danger with online dating as there are plenty of Tinder scams in Colombia

Sure, there are scammers on Tinder all over the world, including Colombia

However, I rarely come across any scammers myself.

Out of 100 girls I meet on Tinder, maybe 1 is a scammer.

And even then, it’s more like 1 out of 500 or some larger number.

You get the idea

Very rarely do I ever encounter scammers in Colombia on Tinder

In the US, it’s much more common in my experience to meet scammers trying to get your credit card info

However, based on my experience in Colombia, scammers are not as likely to use Tinder

Instead, thieves and criminals are more likely to just ride around on a motorcycle and look for someone to steal from with a gun

Regardless, I have come across the very rare Tinder scam in Colombia before

For those interested

Here’s what happened…..

Some odd years ago, I was using Tinder in Colombia when I met some chick who claimed to be from Brazil.

According to her photos, she was light brown skin with black hair and a fairly fit body.

We exchanged numbers and began talking on Whatsapp soon after.

She was very flirty and also gave me her basic story – which she was married for around 5 years or so and then her husband died of cancer.

Anyway, we start planning on having a date soon enough

She says she wants to have a date at some restaurant far from where I lived in Bogota

On my end, I wasn’t interested in going to a restaurant on the first date. That’s something I never do since most of thetime I just want sex and not interested in spending money on a chick I don’t know

She’s insistent on going to some specific restaurant and we eventually settle on a park instead that was near this restaurant

Then I ask her for her Facebook out of curiosity

She gives me a link to her Facebook but I take her Facebook name and copy and paste it into the Facebook search tool

In which I find out she has 2 Facebook profiles oddly enough

Both of them with the same name and same profile picture

The first profile was the profile she sent me the link to – and it backed up her story

That she is from Brazil

Her husband died of cancer recently

Everything seemed legit

Then I check out her second profile

This profile is the exact opposite of everything she told me

Instead of being from Brazil, she apparently is from Maracaibo, Venezuela.

And this second Facebook profile was still very active with her posting stuff on it recently.

Her husband? Well, he seemed alive to me.

Her other Facebook showed her as “married” to some guy and I checked out his Facebook.

Alive and well it seemed.

Every day he was posting stuff on that profile

Including on the same day I checked out his profile.

I guess they got Facebook in the afterlife…..

Well, with all the money and reach Facebook has, I guess that doesn’t surprise me

What’s even weirder is the fact that it was very easy to find out this was a scam by just looking her up manually on Facebook

You would think thieves and scammers would be smarter?

Well, fortunately for me, I guess they aren’t always

Furthermore, I asked a few of my friends about the neighborhood she wanted to meet me in.

I don’t remember where it was and my notes don’t mention the name of the neighborhood or restaurant

But I remember asking some friends at the time about this place where we were going to meet

And it was some neighborhood known for being a bit more dangerous than normal here in Colombia.

Finally, I send her a few messages on Whatsapp about it.

She denies everything until I send her the link to her other Facebook

At that point I call her out for being a scammer and I make a threat to report her to the police

Now granted, I wasn’t really going to do that

Mostly because the police here in Colombia don’t do much to begin with

For the most part, it would be a waste of time

But then she went on about “how I shouldn’t get involved” and not to mess with her.

That I’d be causing myself problems and then she blocks me on Whatsapp

Well, that was that I guess.

Or so I thought?

It Gets Worse….

Because about a week after that incident, I received a few calls on my throwaway phone (the same phone I used to talk with this Venezuelan chick)

And it was some guy saying he has my brother kidnapped

Even though I have no relatives living in Colombia or anywhere in Latin America for that matter

You see, what happens here in Colombia (and a few other countries) is that sometimes people will make calls to other individuals

Making threats about how if they don’t send some money, their family will be hurt or something like that

Even if they don’t know you well or don’t have anyone in your family taken

But in my entire time living in Colombia (and Latin America more broadly), this was the only time this ever happened to me

Never once did someone make a call saying they have some family member hostage

Until then….

Which makes me think it was connected to the Venezuelan chick I pissed off

Especially since it only happened soon after our conversation about her being a scammer.

Regardless, I didn’t send her any money and basically told the guy on the phone to kick rocks.

Fortunately for me, the Venezuelan scammer and this guy on the phone didn’t know where I lived.

More than that, they also didn’t know much about me personally

Because one thing I do with online dating is to limit how much personal information I give about myself

Especially to chicks that I don’t intend to have anything serious with

Which means not giving away my full name or other identifying information

Mostly because scams like this can happen

Although, as I said before, rarely

But in cases like this, things could always turn a lot uglier

Especially if the guy on the phone knew where I lived for example

Perhaps something worse could have happened

Therefore, even though scams like this rarely happen, you always have to be careful in my opinion

Overall, this story isn’t meant to discourage anyone from visiting Colombia and enjoying the beautiful women down here

Instead, it’s meant to make sure you all are more prepared when it comes to Tinder scams in Colombia and to better know how to protect yourself

With that said…

What are some important lessons that can be taken away from this story about….

Tinder scams in Colombia?

  • When it comes to dating women in general, I’d advise not to spend too much money on them in the first date. That includes not taking them to restaurants. This is mostly because it helps filter out the women looking to just use you for money. It’s also pointless to do so if you just want something casual.
  • Always research where the date is going to be and make sure it is in a safe area. It’s probably best for the date to be in an area that you know personally.
  • Additionally, if you just want something casual, there is no point in traveling across the city on the first date. Logistically, how do you plan on getting her back to your place on that same date without a very long trip (as in the case in this story)?
  • Furthermore, never give out too much personal information to the person you are about to see. You haven’t met them yet and don’t know if they are someone legit or someone looking to scam you. In addition, there is no point in giving out personal information to someone you intend to only have something casual with. They won’t be in your life for very long most likely.
  • Finally, make sure to protect yourself with a money belt or a travel pouch while down here. When in a foreign country, you want to make sure your passport and your money is safe regardless of what situation you are in.

More Tips…

  • If possible, get a burner phone or something very cheap that doesn’t require personal information to use it and can use Whatsapp. It would be more inconvenient for a scammer to have your more personal phone that you use to talk with family, work and friends. Furthermore, you can always replace a burner phone. They don’t cost much.
  •  If someone unknown is calling you saying they have your family or friends taken, don’t send them any money. It’s most likely a lie in order to scare you into getting your money.
  • When going out on a date with a girl where drinks are involved, always watch your drink. Never leave it unattended. She might put a drug in it in order to steal from you later.
  • Above all else, don’t be afraid of online dating. As said before, it is very unlikely that you will be a target of a scam. In my many years of dating online in Colombia and elsewhere, I can probably count on one hand how many times someone tried to scam me. It can be very dangerous when it happens but it is very rare. Be cautious but have fun.
