When you are traveling abroad to Colombia, you might be worried about being alone and not making friends in Colombia
In which the culture and the language is completely different…
And you know nobody there….
You will often experience loneliness while traveling constantly
However, there is one bright side to traveling throughout Colombia and Latin America more broadly speaking
Which is that sometimes people will be very interested to getting to know you and where you are from
Complete strangers who will approach you in public just to get to know you because you are different — which allows you to begin making friends in Colombia
Keep in mind that in some parts of Colombia very few foreigners will ever show up
And so there are plenty of Colombians who have never left Colombia in their lives (and perhaps not even their own cities or towns) and who have never met a foreigner before
For that reason, it can sometimes be easy making friends in Colombia
Having been to other Latin American countries, I would say Colombians tend to be a bit nicer and more open to meeting foreigners
Compared to Mexico for example…
Where Mexicans are generally fairly open and friendly also but not as interested in meeting foreigners since they are right next to the US and get a lot more tourism
Or Argentina where people seem very closed off and not anywhere as interested in meeting a foreigner
As mentioned in another article in my website, I once had a complete stranger approach me while eating alone at a restaurant
In which this person heard my accent and then approached me once I made my order
And asked basic questions like where I am from, why I am in Colombia and more
Why Does This Happen?
Well, for many of the reasons as explained before
That Colombians generally speaking tend to be nicer and more open to foreigners
Additionally, it was also mentioned that plenty of Colombians have never met a foreigner before
Though this is quickly changing as tourism to Colombia increases by the year
Keep in mind that Colombia used to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world
In which bombings are common enough to scare even local Colombians from visiting certain areas of the city out of fear of being caught up in a bomb attack
And where most people never wanted to step foot inside Colombia
Mostly due to the constant reports about their being lots of violence and drug trafficking in Colombia
Even after the worst violence occurred and Colombia began to become more peaceful…
People were still too scared to visit Colombia…
And even today, there are plenty of people who will never set foot in Colombia because of the fear of violence and also because it is in Latin America
Where some people assume that everything in Latin America is dangerous down here
Which isn’t true but there are plenty of people who believe that to this day
So due to the endless amounts of violence and the image that created for Colombia, the tourism industry in this country never grew very well over the previous decades
And most Colombians never had much experience with foreigners since there were never to begin with
In addition to that, you simply have plenty of very small cities in Colombia that are beautiful but not well known
Because as tourism increases year by year in Colombia these days, most of the tourists go to very usual hot spots of tourism
Such as Medellin, Cartagena, Santa Marta and Bogota
Not as many tourists going to Riohacha, Popoyán, Manizales, Valledupar, Villavicencio, Soledad and more.
So even though tourism is increasing in this country, it is mostly concentrated in just a few parts of Colombia
Meaning there are plenty of places in this country where you can go and easily make friends with local people who would be interested in meeting someone new from another country
Story: Bus Ride with a Cute Colombiana
During the first year in which I returned to Colombia, I spent time teaching English in Barranquilla.
However, I wanted to enjoy other parts of Colombia that were nearby
So I went to the city of Riohacha
On the bus ride to Riohacha, I sat by a very cute Colombian chick
She was wearing more minimal clothing probably because of the intense heat in the region
As there are plenty of cute Colombian chicks who are comfortable showing more skin because they like to and because of the heat in the area
Anyway, we are sitting next to each other
And I noticed that she was looking at my passport as I opened it to look at some of the stamps I had in it
She then opened up to me in English saying “excuse me, do you speak English?”
In which I responded in Spanish that I did and that I also speak Spanish
She then blushed a little bit and laughed saying that her English isn’t the best
Which is very common here – sometimes people assume you don’t speak Spanish and will try their best opening in whatever English they learned before
So we had a nice conversation and she asked the usual questions
Where am I from, what am I doing here, etc.
The conversation after an hour turned a little more flirtatious as she asked if I had a girlfriend actually
And we exchanged numbers and gave her a nice kiss on the cheek before we separated once we reached Riohacha
We met sometime later that week since I was spending time in Riohacha to get to know the city a little more
And I took her out to a nice park that I learned about through a travel guide similar to this one
And things escalated from there
She was a nice sweet girl who seemed genuinely interested in meeting a foreigner
And said she only met a couple in her life during the Carnival of Barranquilla that happens every year
Otherwise, never met any other foreigners
And that’s just one example by the way…
Of how being a foreigner in Colombia can sometimes land you in interesting scenarios where people want to meet you
Including very cute girls down here also
Even though most Colombians won’t approach you like that, there are plenty that will from time to time — helping you in making friends in Colombia
And it makes the experience here overall more fun and enjoyable
Overall, I hope this gave more insight into life and making friends in Colombia.
