Why is it that so many expats live in Colombia?
Well, to understand this issue, let’s go into a little story…
About four years ago, I was spending some time in Pereira and had been spending time with a Colombian girl named Luciana
One clear night, she and I decided to go out for some drinks with some of her friends
Well, we showed up to a bar and her friends showed up a little bit earlier than we did
At this bar, her friends had arranged it where we were all going to put a few tables together so that we can all sit together more easily
Given that our group was pretty big
While sitting down at this place, I was sitting next to a guy who was also a foreigner like I am in Colombia
Which is pretty cool given that most of the people I meet in Colombia are Colombians and I never meet too many foreigners
So I started talking with the guy and asked where was he from
His name was Andris and he was from Latvia – a country right next to Russia
Which was pretty cool given that I never had met anyone from Latvia and I assumed he was probably one of the few people from Latvia to visit Colombia specifically
Since he didn’t speak much English, we only spoke in Spanish to each other. At the time, he was dating a friend of the girl that I had been seeing at that time
He told me that this was his first year in Colombia
“How do you like it?” I asked him
And his eyes got big…
First, he loved the curvy bodies of the women here and he generally preferred Latinas over any other group of women
So for him – being in Colombia was like being in pussy heaven for the guy
Because similar to other foreigner men in Colombia, most of the men here have noticed that there is some degree of a “gringo” advantage that they have with Colombian women as I described in another article
Second, he loved the cheap alcohol and the drugs also
From what I learned about him in the years that we spent hanging out, he was the type of guy who loved having a more adventurous lifestyle
He often left to party late into the night and always knew a way to get cheap drugs like cocaine or weed specifically
And so for him, Colombia was also great because it had everything that he could need to make him happy – drugs, cheap beer and endless amount of sexy Colombian women
Third, he liked the weather and the beaches near the Caribbean Coast also. From what he told me, Latvia is a very cold country and he got tired of always being cold
Finally, the low cost of living in Colombia was the final deal for him
Though it wasn’t as cheap for him given that Latvians don’t earn USD, he still somehow found it cheap anyway
And cheap enough to make him happy living here because he always said how he loved the fact that “he didn’t have to work hard to enjoy life” in Colombia
Mix all those things together then – the sexy Colombian women, the low cost of living, cheep bear, the drugs and warm weather – and that is why he was in Colombia
And you could argue….
Nothing else mattered to him – just the party lifestyle
And you know what?
That’s very common among a lot of men I know who visit Colombia for short term or long term stays
A good deal of them, though not all, are mostly here just because of the women and beer
Nothing else
And some of them even live a more nomadic lifestyle where they go from country to country enjoying the women and cheap cost of living all around Latin America as I described in this article
If you took the cheap beer away, maybe 5% of them would leave
If you took the sexy and easy women away, then you just lost 45% of them most likely
The reality is that a good deal of Colombia’s tourism from men – though not even close to all – is centered about partying and having sex with Colombian women
In large part because of how easy they can be depending on which city in Colombia you are at
While also because they have great bodies — naturally or sometimes with plastic surgery as described in another article I wrote
After meeting Andris at the bar that night, we eventually met up again for a few more beers and soon became great friends
Though Andris eventually left Colombia because he got tired of the negatives of living in this country, he spent a total of around 4 or more years living here
And ultimately became one of my best friends that I have met in this country
And throughout the time that he was here, he always enjoyed the benefits that were mentioned – women, beaches, drugs, beer and low cost of living
Would often take the occasional trip to Santa Marta from time to time
Would often be out at night until morning having fun
How did he make his living doing all of this while living here?
Well, he wasn’t an English teacher – those hours wouldn’t work for him and they don’t pay as much as what you would need to live a good life here
So he had some savings from previous jobs in Latvia that paid him very well back before he went to Colombia and he knew how to make decent money online without having to work too hard
Which was good because he spent a lot of hours looking for a new Colombian woman to sleep with and drinking beer
He was a good guy and fun to hang around for sure
I have met other guys similar to Andris that live here because of the sex with the Colombian women and the beer
Most of the time these guys leave after about a month to 6 months
If Colombia changed their visa laws where you could leave and re enter Colombia every 6 months like some other Latin American countries, then I guarantee you some of these guys would stay here even loner
For Andris, he managed to get residency eventually and so he was able to extend his time here much beyond 6 months
Though I heavily encourage all men to have other reasons for living in Colombia beyond just women and cheap beer – especially if you are going to be living here longer than 6 months
However, I know that it likely won’t ever change unless you took all Colombian women and forced them to live in another country that wasn’t Colombia
There would be a big increase of tourism to the new country where you relocate them
Huh, how strange is that? Must be a coincidence
Well, either way, it doesn’t matter
I definitely have had my casual fun in this country and I’m not complaining
Just reporting the facts that quite a few men come here for the women and the cheap beer
And that is one major reason, though not the only one to be fair, for why many expats live in Colombia
And as long as they are happy – like Andris was for most of his 4 years here – then no problem
Enjoy your life everyone!
