If you actually want to live in Colombia long term like I do, then you have to realize that the hooking up and casual fun gets old eventually for most of us
And ultimately it helps to have other reasons to live in Colombia outside of just the casual sex with beautiful women down here
Because there will be numerous challenges that come with living in Colombia as detailed in other articles I wrote like this one
So having said that, what are some other ways to avoid burnout from living in Colombia?

Book 1: The Colombian Reader
This book is great because it provides over 100 selections that reveal a lot about Colombian history and culture. It goes well when reading some of the other history and culture books in this list.

This is one of the best books on the market for understanding the efforts made to kill Pablo Escobar during the conflict he contributed to.

Book 3: Colombia – Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture
This is overall a great book that goes into detail on Colombian culture. I recommend reading this before showing up to Colombia to give you greater insight into this country.

Book 4: Lonely Planet Colombia
Whenever I travel to a new country, I usually find Lonely Planet to provide reliable enough information on the country I am going to.
So for Colombia as well, I’d recommend this book for anyone new to Colombia.

This is an interesting book that goes into the Colombian underworld and looks at the life of an Irishman that witnessed a lot of the violence and Colombian underworld. All of it based on a real story.

Book 6: One Hundred Years of Solitude
This is one of the best Colombian novels out there by one of the best Colombian authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
If you are interested in learning more from Colombian literature, this is the first book to start off with.

This is a book that has over 26 stories written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and serves well for reading alongside his great novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

This is a great book that really looks into the life of Simon Bolivar – one of the great liberators of South America from Spanish Colonial rule.

Similar to Lonely Planet, this is another book series that is great to read if you want to know more about a place before getting there.

This is one of the best books I have found that really goes into detail on various aspects of Colombian culture. It covers topics such as religion, family life, culture in urban and rural areas, society, forms of government and much more.

Book 11: Colombian Slang by Gutiérrez Fernández and María Paula
If you would like to know more about Colombian slang before getting here, check out this book. It is one of the best books for that topic. It has over 500 different words to learn that will help you handle Colombian Spanish.

This is a decent book to read if you want to understand more about recent Colombian history within the last decade.

This is a cheap eBook that goes into decent detail on the history of Colombia from the time of colonialism to modern day Colombia.
It also has information on modern day Colombia, including information on their tourism, the bigger cities, the peace treaty and more.
It overall serves as a very affordable resource that provides the fundamental basic knowledge you will need to understanding Colombian history.

Book 16: Between Legitimacy and Violence: A History of Colombia, 1875-2002
This is a more authoritative book that goes into greater detail of Colombian history during the 20th century. It will provide you better insight into how Colombia spiraled into the violence it is known for.
Overall, it does a great job covering Colombian history of the 20th century from a political, cultural, economic and social perspective.

Book 17: The Making of Modern Colombia: A Nation in Spite of Itself
This is a good book that covers the creation of the Colombian struggle for independence and the creation of the Colombian state. It then goes into detail on the political, cultural and legal changes that occurred in Colombia during the 20th century until modern day.
As a bonus, this book also covers a little bit of modern Latin American history in general as well.

Book 18: Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History
This is one of the better history books regarding Colombia in this list as it really goes into much deeper detail on Colombian history over an entire two centuries.
One of the benefits to picking this book is that it also has a good photo essay, a resource guide, a detailed chronology with a well-detailed description of Colombian history.

Book 19: 47 Amazing Things to See and Do in Colombia
This is a nice little guide that goes into detail on 47 different things you should see and do in Colombia (as you could tell by the title).
It’s overall a very cheap resource that is worth every dollar. Definitely recommend to help you better know what to do while in this beautiful country.

Book 20: Delirium by Laura Restrepo
This is another amazing novel written by a great Colombian novelist. In this case, I wanted to recommend a good book written by somebody other than Gabriel Garcia Marquez to introduce you to more authors down here.
This book goes into detail on life in Bogota during the 1980s and shows how badly the drug trade impacted Colombian society. On a positive note, it also shows how Colombia has transformed beyond the violence into something better over the previous years.
