- 5 Reasons to Get a Burner Phone in Colombia
After a while of living in Colombia, I soon decided that it is important to get a burner phone in Colombia
Now, if I remember right, burner phones are not as common in the US as they are down here in Colombia or elsewhere in Latin America
In fact, when I first told some of my friends and family up in the US that I was going to get a burner phone…
Most of them made jokes about how I must be a CIA agent or a drug dealer or something weird like that
However, there are some very legitimate points to be made about getting a burner phone in Colombia or anywhere in Latin America.
And this is something that I learned very quickly during my time living down here in Colombia
So here are the 5 main reasons for why you should get a burner phone if you ever decide to live in Colombia.
….And most likely speaking, many of these issues probably apply to those who want to live in the US or outside of Latin America anyway.
Reason 1: Theft Issues
When living in Colombia or anywhere in Latin America, you will notice that one of the main issues of crime is theft of phones.
That’s right – I’m not talking about murder or drug trafficking
Even though those are very big issues in Colombia, I’m talking about issues that will impact you directly
Because even though drug trafficking is an issue, how likely are you going to encounter that problem? Are you a drug dealer in a cartel down here?
Probably not.
So when it comes to theft, you have to know that theft of cell phones is very common in Latin America, including Colombia
Whenever someone uses public transportation for example, they are at great risk for getting their phone stolen from theirpockets.
Therefore, do you really want to carry around an expensive 300 dollar phone while living down here?
Where someone will probably steal it
Too many times I have seen local Colombian girls here buy super expensive phones that they have to get on a payment plan for
Only to show the world how nice of a phone they got
And then it gets stolen
And more comically, I have heard a story of a guy I met in Colombia getting his phone stolen and then finding someone selling his exact same phone on a street market down here
So overall, getting a burner phone is much better. If someone steals it, you lost 25 to 50 bucks. Just get another one. Not as bad as losing 300 to 500 bucks.
Or whatever crazy amount people spend on cellphones these days.
Reason 2: Privacy
With all the issues surrounding privacy these days with companies stealing your data, smart phones are not innocent either.
I won’t go too far into this topic but overall your privacy will be better protected if you don’t get a smart phone that collectsyour information and where that information is sold to someone else.
I’d much rather have a burner phone that is better for my privacy. Just my preference.
Reason 3: Why Spend the Extra Money?
When it comes to phones these days, it’s crazy how much money people spend on them. Going for 300 or 500 bucks.
I’ve read in the news how people spend 800 to 1000 bucks on their phones!
And in Colombia, there are plenty of Colombian chicks who get on payment plans for their expensive phones.
Even though they only make 300 to 500 bucks a month.
How stupid is that?
All the money wasted on something you replace so often or so frequently gets stolen
And what do you need it for?
I only use my phone for making calls and texting on Whatsapp. I don’t need any of the other features and I’m fine and happy for not spending a crazy amount for that.
Reason 4: For People Less Important
When dating girls in Colombia, most of them in your life will not be that important
At least in my experience, most of them have been for casual encounters and nothing more.
So I’d rather not give out my personal cellphone that I have for contacting friends and family to
I just give them the phone number to one of my burner phones and that’s it
In large part because I learned quickly down here that some chicks literally contact you months later to follow up and all that
And some of them I’m not interested in seeing again
So fortunately none of them now have access to my more personal phone
And I’d rather keep it that way so I don’t occasionally get contacted on my personal phone
Just the phone I use for people I don’t know too well or have any interest of keeping in my more personal life like family andfriends.
Reason 5: Security
As mentioned in another article on this website, I once contacted a woman who claimed to have a husband who died and was looking for a new guy in her life.
Well, I figured out very quickly that she was a scammer and that her boyfriend was still alive
And that she was basically trying to trick me into going into some bad neighborhood
After I called her out on that, she contacted me later with some other guy saying they my brother kidnapped.
Well, I knew obviously they didn’t and they were basically trying to keep scamming me
And you know what?
Scams like that are very common in Colombia and elsewhere in Latin America
So in my opinion, it’s always better to give them a burner phone that you don’t use too much
That way they can’t mess with you on your more personal phone
Just my advice anyway
And when speaking of protecting yourself while in Colombia, make sure to get some other useful tools such as a theft proof backpack or a money wallet
