If you are thinking of improving your Spanish or you are simply interested in learning more about Colombian culture, you should ideally be checking out Colombian music and all of the amazing Colombian bands that exist
Of course, with all the options out there, which amazing Colombian bands should you listen to?
Given that we all have different interests and tastes in music, it’s difficult to make a suggestion that everyone would enjoy
For that reason, I included a list below of some of my favorite bands from Colombia that include some variety in music – mostly between salsa and rock music of different generations
Check out any of the amazing Colombian bands below!
First: Consulado Popular
This is one of my favorite rock bands in Colombia
Based in Bogota, they have a wide variety of good songs and also some good covers of popular songs like Loser by Beck.
For learning Spanish, they might be a little bit difficult to understand when it comes to their singing but their band is a good example of music that is not widely heard by foreigners in general
So I’d recommend them if you want a good rock band that is not as traditional or widely well known
If you happen to read Spanish well, you can also check out this article about them in El Tiempo
When it comes to song recommendations, I would suggest you try listening to:
- Perdedor
- Vas a Caer
- Me Mamé

Second: Grupo Niche
Founded in 1978 in Cali, Colombia, Grupo Niche is one of my favorite bands in Colombia that plays salsa music.
They are a much more widely known and famous band. If you ever intent to start listening to Colombian music and especially salsa music if you happen to be going to Cali, then this band is an absolute must.
When it comes to song recommendations, I’d go for:
- Gotas de Lluvia
- Duele Más
- Hagamos lo Que Diga el Corazón

Third: Fruko y Sus Tesos
Founded in 1969, Fruko y Sus Tesos is a really popular band across Latin America.
This band also created a lot of really popular salsa music and is another one to listen to if you want to practice salsa music before going to Cali or any bar or nightclub in Colombia that happens to have salsa music for you.
When it comes to song recommendations, I’d say you should check out:
- Charanga Campesina
- Los Charcos
- El Preso

Fourth: Sistema Solar
Sistema Solar is a band that was formed in 2006 that has a wide range of influences in their music as they incorporate afro-caribbean music, cumbia, champeta, bullerengue and other types of music as well in their songs.
If you want to listen to a band that then has a wide variety of Latin influences in their music, Sistema Solar is a good band to try
In my experience, this band was more popular in certain areas of Colombia like Barranquilla or Cartagena.
When it comes to song recommendations, I’d suggest:
- Bienvenidos
- Mi Kolombia
- Yo Voy Ganao
Here is the link to the website of this band
Fifth: La Derecha
Formed in 1990 in Bogota, Colombia, La Derecha is a cool rock band that has plenty of good songs to listen to
Out of all the bands from Bogota, this one is one of my favorites.
When it comes to song suggestions, I’d suggest:
- El Puñal
- Alice
- Si Te Busco
This is the link to the Facebook page of this band
Sixth: Latin Brothers
Considered to be a sister act to Fruko y Sus Tesos as the singer known as “Fruko” from Fruko y Sus Tesos originally led this band, Latin Brothers
Similar to Fruko y Sus Tesos, this band was also quite popular and played a lot of salsa music as well
So if you wish to improve your understanding of salsa music and how to dance to it, this band works well also
Some songs I’d recommend when it comes to this band are
- Sobre Las Olas
- El Serrucho
- Buscándote
You can find out more about this band through this website
Seventh: Los Speakers
Formed in 1963 in Bogota, Colombia, Los Speakers was another rock band
This band is great if you would like to listen to some older rock music in Colombia that I would consider to be more classic for Colombia as they made plenty of good songs back then
This band was somewhat influenced by the Beatles, so if you like the Beatles, then I would imagine that you would like this band also
When it comes to songs I like, I would recommend the following songs:
- Si La Guerra Es Un Buen Negocio, Invierte A Tus Hijos
- M.S. 63-64
- La Casa Del Sol Caciente
You can find out more about this band through this website
Eighth: Diamante Eléctrico
If you want a more recent band, Diamante Eléctrico is a more recent musical group that often plays garage, blues and rock.
In recent years, this band has gotten more popular as they have played in France, Mexico and other parts of the world also.
When it comes to song recommendations, I’d listen to the following:
- Las Horas
- Oro
- Rotos
Here is the link to the website of this band
Ninth: La Pestilencia
This is a hardcore punk band that was formed in Bogota in 1986.
This band still exists to this day with recent songs having come out and one of their founding members still being in the band
When it comes to song suggestions, I’d listen to the following:
- Amor
- Vive Tu Vida
- Desaparecidos
Here is the link to the Facebook of this band
Tenth: Puerto Candelaria
Putting aside salsa and rock music for a moment, it’s be good also to listen to some Colombian jazz music for those who like jazz
Puerto Candelaria is a recent band that was formed in 2000 in Medellin
Given that I like jazz quite a bit, I was happy to finally find a band from Colombia that plays jazz given that I haven’t seen too many down here that do
I came across this band about 4 or 5 years ago and they are pretty decent
When it comes to song recommendations, I’d go with the following:
- Cumbia Rebelde
- Crazy Party
- Amor Fingido
You can find the website to this band here

Hope you enjoy the music!
