Marriage & Divorce in Colombia

Over time I have often been asked about marriage and divorce in Colombia over my years living here

In another article written on this website

The national divorce rate of Colombia was looked at understand this issue

Even though Colombia has a 9% national divorce rate…

That number is getting higher as it is in most of the world

However, as said before many times on this website, not every part of Colombia is the same

And so that 9% divorce rate doesn’t really show the reality of divorce in every specific part of Colombia

As Colombia is divided into Departments…

There are some Departments that have much higher divorce rates in the country than others

So below is a map of the specific Colombian Departments to understand marriage & divorce in Colombia

  30. Santander: 117 divorces and 1,194 separations
  31. Norte de Santander: 445 divorces and 445 separations
  32. San Andrés y Providencia: Based on limited data, it was reported that this department had 20 divorces in 2013.

It is Important to Remember….

That there are likely different factors that impact the divorce rates in these areas.

First, some of the areas listed tend to be more liberal than in other parts of Colombia.

That means less traditional families, more casual sex…

And less emphasis on the importance of family and maintaining the marriage through rough times.

Areas like that in Colombia are places that are a little more urbanized

Like the cities of Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla and more.

In contrast, you have states that are much more rural and a much greater conservative culture

Such as Guainía, Vichada, La Guajira, Amazonas and Chocó

On top of that….

Some areas of Colombia simply have a greater tendency to not divorce and go through separation instead

Such as the department of Santander, which has notable cities in Colombia like Bucaramanga and Barrancabermeja

Where, from my experience, people were even more hesitant to divorce because of religious reasons

In which they decided that separation would be better for the family instead

For that reason and perhaps even other influences…

Santander is notable in that it reported 1,194 separations and 117 divorces in 2017

Moreover, some of these departments, such as Vaupés, are likely to not have perfect data

Because of the lack of access to some parts of that specific department

Additionally….

It is also important to remember that these numbers simply reflect overall divorce numbers

They don’t necessarily show the fact that some areas of Colombia are going to have more divorces

Simply because the have more people in general who can get married

For example, take Bogota – which is a city that has over 8million people

For contrast, we can compare that to other departments like La Guajira

Which has just over 900,000 people living in it

Then you have Amazonas, which only has over 74,000 peopleliving there

Chocó has about 490,000 people and Vichada has around 68,000people

Guainía has 40,000 people and Meta has over 900,000 people

Then you have the more populated Departments that are notBogota Capital District

Such as Santander, which has over 2 million people

Bolivar has over 2 million people also and Atlántico has about 2.4 million people

Valle del Cauca has 4.6 million people and Antioquia has 6.3 million people

And then you go back to the statistics about divorce rates and can easily see the correlation

Therefore, this should be considered as well when talking about which part of Colombia has more divorce

However, it’s not always just the population factor that influences divorce rates as said before

In some specific cases…

Some Departments experience so much violence from drug organizations

Which likely has a negative impact on families who have to live with the stress of that

For example, Antioquia is a large Department that has a similarly high divorce rate but it’s fairly proportional

Then you got Valle del Cauca, which is a bit smaller than Antioquia but has notably more divorces

With 3,917 divorces reported in Valle del Cauca and 2,705 divorces reported in Antioquia

In part because the city of Cali is in Valle del Cauca and Cali is a dangerous city

And while Antioquia is not perfect, the cities there are calmer than Cali with less violence

Final Thoughts

In the end, divorce statistics only show a small part of a larger story

As illustrated in some of the articles on this website about divorce in Colombia

There are many reasons for why divorce happens and also many cases where a separation happens instead

Which is not always reflected in the statistics you might see

So when deciding which parts of Colombia are ideal for finding a nice Colombian woman to marry….

You have to combine the statistics with personal experience in Colombia to have a better understanding

When talking about Departments, I’d say some of the best areas are, from my experience, the following…

Cauca, Bogota Capital Department, La Guajira, Casanare and Santander.

And all of that comes from my personal experience in Colombia…

Of course, there are other departments as well that you could focus on

If you wish to find a nice Colombian woman to marry.

Additionally, there are also several companies out there that can help you in finding a loving Colombian wife — such as Dream Connections

Fortunately for you…

There are other articles on this website about some of the best places for marrying a Colombian woman

In the end, hopefully you have good luck in finding someone nice to marry in Colombia
