How to Learn Spanish & Meet Colombian Women for Under $100

For those who want to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women, what is the most efficient way to do so?

As often mentioned in my articles, learning Spanish is fundamental if you are going to enjoy the dating scene or have fun in Colombia or most of Latin America.

But how do you learn Spanish and meet Colombian women cheaply and also while you are still in your home country before you travel down here?

Way back when I traveled to Colombia for the first time over a decade ago, I didn’t speak much Spanish.

Despite having studied Spanish in college for a bit by that point, I didn’t have much practical experience listening and talking in the language.

And if your experience talking and listening in Spanish is mostly in the classroom, you won’t get very far.

Especially as accents can be hard to understand and sometimes people might seem like they are talking fast to you.

Or your brain just isn’t accustomed to listening well to it yet.

On top of that, you might still in the process of thinking to yourself “is it yo haces, yo hacemos, yo hago, yo hacen?” everytime you are about to speak in Spanish.

Back when I first visited Colombia over a decade ago, I was exactly like that and it was rough for me to speak and listen in the language.

Especially given that I was based in Barranquilla where the accent there is much harder to understand than the accents in other parts of Colombia like Bogota or Medellin.

But living in Colombia at the time helped me learn Spanish and meet Colombian women.

But you know what really did it for me while in Colombia for the first time?

Having a girlfriend in Colombia (and meeting other girls before her) that I was able to practice my Spanish with.

That experience dating Colombian women really pushed my Spanish to a much stronger level.

And ultimately that is what you need to really learn Spanish efficiently – practice it!

Now how do you practice Spanish with actual Spanish speakers if you are living in the US where most people speak English in most occasions?

Unless you are living in Miami, LA or some other part of the US with lots of Spanish speakers, you are quite limited.

And even more limited if you live in a country with a lot less Spanish speakers then the US like Germany, the UK, Russia, India, etc

So here I will recommend a good way to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women efficiently before you even step on a plane to Colombia or any other Latin American country

But we are going to do it by killing two birds with one stone

Because this will be a good way to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women on dates.

So let’s break it down….

¡Vámonos parceros!

Step 1: Get a Textbook

learn Spanish & meet Colombian

Now while I think having an instructor to help you learn Spanish would be more helpful at this first step, I’m aiming to do this in a more time and cost efficient manner.

Especially since classes in Spanish can be a bit more expensive.

And also there are plenty of resources out there to help you learn.

So to begin I would recommend you purchase this textbook. It’s the same textbook I used for learning Spanish and is a product of a company called Vista Higher Learning.

Back when I first started learning Spanish, I used other products designed by this company to learn Spanish and any product that I have used from them has been wonderful.

I still have this textbook in my apartment. It covers all the grammar you will ever need to know in an efficient manner and has plenty of vocabulary for you to pick up that is useful in real conversations.

Now this textbook on Amazon as of this writing costs 61 cents hardback used or $43 USD hardback new. I personally would get a used version if I had to buy another one given the price difference and also that the used version you get probably won’t be bad. It’s only 61 cents anyway.

Once you have this textbook or any other one you prefer, give yourself 2 hours a day for a month or two to cover the grammar

And use it to pick up on some of the vocabulary you will need also.

Additionally, some vocabulary you will need to know that I recommend you pick up now would be this:

  • Que significa (word)? (what does this word mean?)
  • Puedes repetirte de nuevo por favor? (can you repeat yourself please?)
  • Más despacio por favor (slower please)

For actual conversations, some of these phrases will be important to help you get the point across that you didn’t understand something when in a conversation with a Spanish speaker.

All of which will help you learn Spanish and meet Colombian women.

Step 2: Duolingo & Other Resources

While you are learning the grammar and vocabulary, I find Duolingo as a good resource to practice the Spanish grammar.

They have plenty of free problems for you to solve to practice your grammar.

Also, when learning the grammar, I found it useful to simply try and write sentences while trying to use certain grammar principles on a piece of paper.

This will simply give you more practice applying certain grammar rules in Spanish and also will help you remember certain vocabulary.

On top of that, you will want to also practice listening and reading in Spanish also.

For reading in Spanish, I have a whole list of news sources you can check out online in Spanish in my Resources page here.

Just click that button here and go to where it says “News Sources” near the bottom. It will give you plenty of different online news websites that are based in specific Colombian cities. You can read their articles online for free and use that to practice your reading and pick up new vocabulary.

Also, it will allow you to better understand any specific Colombian city you are going to since that list has the news sources that cover current events in very specific cities in Colombia.

Now for listening, I recommend TuneIn and Radio.es to get access to radio stations in Colombia for free and to improve your listening skills.

When it comes to music, I also have this article here that recommends some Colombian bands you can listen to in Spanish as well.

Finally, you can also watch for free different Colombians that make Youtube videos as an extra free source of material to improve your listening in Spanish.

I personally don’t watch any Colombian Youtubers but this would help you I’m sure. I simply looked up online “best Colombian youtubers” and got recommended the following Youtube accounts. So check them out:

  • Sebastián Villalobos
  • Pautips
  • CarlosVivesVIVO
  • Enchufetv
  • Fausto Murillo

learn Spanish & meet Colombian

Finally, some of you might insist on having a professor or private instructor to help you learn Spanish. Granted, we all learn differently and some of us do better with more personal instruction.

More personal instruction can also provide you with someone who can provide reading and practice material and even speak in Spanish with you.

Looking bad at my college years, there is no way I can justify spending the amount of money I spent or other people spend to study a foreign language in college.

When you are talking hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, it doesn’t make sense when you have all this free information online and also cheap resources to purchase.

But if you insist on having a more personal instruction, taking a standard community college class locally might help you a bit and might be reasonable if cheap enough.

A quick Google search shows a standard three-unit class in the US costing somewhere between $135 to $750 USD.

I personally would not recommend you spend more than $200 USD on any community college course for Spanish.

With all the resources available, it seems like too much money.

So if you want some instruction, I would recommend this outside of community college:

First, take the textbook and go through it like I said. Alongside other resources in “Step 2”, you can choose to use online private guidance to help you with any specific grammar rules that you might be confused by.

That way you aren’t paying a instructor to teach you the basics that are easy enough to understand your own.

Simply have your own list of questions regarding what you find confusing or difficult to understand about the Spanish language and try to fix your misunderstandings with the free information you can find online.

If free information online doesn’t help, you can send me an email and maybe I can answer your question for free if it doesn’t take too much of my time.

Now if that doesn’t help, you can find someone on Fiverr or Italki to pay by the hour to help eliminate any confusion you have. Now that would make your journey to learning Spanish a little more expensive than $100 USD depending on how many hours you use but it still much cheaper than taking a class in college.

And for those who don’t know, Fiverr is a website that you can hire someone by the hour to do anything you two agree on. The lowest rates are $5USD an hour so it can be pretty cheap. Italki is a website designed to help you find specifically someone who should know how to teach a foreign language and you will easily enough find someone who can teach Spanish (perhaps even from Colombia).

And also it is more time efficient because this still allows you to learn Spanish at your own pace without going at a slower pace they might use in college for students who need more time than others to learn Spanish.

Which, in the end, will make it easier to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women later.

Step 3: Meeting the Chicas

Now this is the step that will truly get you to a more advanced level with your Spanish because it will involve a lot more real practice with Spanish speakers.

And that’s ultimately what you want – to get your feet in the water and begin practicing with real people.

It will make you think on your feet, get accustomed to hearing real Spanish, learn new vocabulary and to practice the grammar you learned.

But just how are you going to meet and practice with the chicas when you live in a small town in Michigan or a small city in England with few Spanish speakers?

Well, with the internet, it’s pretty easy.

Here are two tools you can use to do so.

Tinder Plus and Cupid Media.

Let’s break those down individually so you know how to use them to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women.

First Tool: Tinder Plus

Now last I checked, Tinder Plus costs about $10 USD per month. You will arguably get your best bang for your buck when it comes to practicing Spanish with it while living in your home town.

When you purchase it, it will give you several benefits.

First, you can press a purple button that makes your profile more noticeable on Tinder to women and you will get a lot more matches. You can use this once per month.

Second, you can swipe and match with women from all over the world.

And I get that in the US, men are not usually very satisfied with Tinder because of the amount of fake profiles, scammers and women looking to fish attention out of men on Instagram and social media.

While there are some women fishing for attention, you don’t have as many fake profiles or scammers from what I have seen in Colombia before.

On top of that, there’s a lot less women fishing for attention anyway – especially if you are not swiping for women in the most touristy and biggest cities of Latin America.

That would be Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Bogota, Medellin, Panama City, etc.

But even then, it’s easy enough to find more normal women in those cities.

And you have more quantity also.

But the fact that you can swipe in and match with women from all over Latin America gives you endless amounts of women to practice Spanish with.

And maybe even get sexual with also.

Now it’s ideal to match with women from cities you will actually be visiting in Colombia or Latin America but it’s not necessary.

While matching with women from Colombia, you can match with some from other places like Bolivia or Mexico where you might find the Spanish easier to understand.

Though if you are going to Colombia, it’d be beneficial to match more often with women from the cities there since they can also teach you typical Colombian slang.

The only other thing here is to not swipe with women from Argentina or Uruguay since you might find their accents when talking with them to be a bit too different from other parts of Latin America like Colombia.

That could end up causing you some confusion if you are new to Spanish.

And of course, don’t swipe in Brazil since they speak Portuguese obviously.

But once you do begin matching with women from any city you choose, make sure to try to get her off Tinder as soon as possible.

We will get into that later in this article but now let’s discuss Cupid Media as another tool to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women.

Second Tool: Cupid Media

Cupid Media is the other dominant resource for meeting women in Latin America from my experience.

They have websites dedicated to meeting women in Latin America more broadly speaking, in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and the Dominican Republic.

Not to mention countries in other regions of the world if that interests you.

Now I have a review of one of those websites called Colombian Cupid that you can read here if you are interested in Colombia specifically.

And their websites regarding other Latin countries work in a very similar manner to how Colombian Cupid works so you won’t find much difference there despite the difference in nationality of the women.

But these websites work essentially in this manner:

First, you sign up for free. You create and design your profile. Then you can scroll and check out the different profiles of women.

Now if you want to message these women, you have to pay for a membership fee, which you can read on the different membership options in my Colombian Cupid review here.

If you decide to go that route, you can simply message any woman you want and see if she replies.

And in my experience, many of them do.

Now out of all the Cupid websites, I found that Dominican Cupid actually has some of the most responsive women and also has much higher quantities of women that you can talk to.

However, you can find plenty of nice women to talk with on any of their Cupid websites.

Now let’s move onto how to actually get numbers from these two online tools so you have women to meet and opportunities to practice your Spanish from your home.

Step 4: Getting Their Numbers

learn Spanish & meet Colombian

Now there’s no perfect way to do this. Some men would rather interact first for a tiny bit with these women on here while other men would rather ask for the number right away.

I’m from the latter group since I don’t find much difference in success rate at getting the number between either talking for a bit on Tinder or asking for the number right away.

So send her a message that looks like the following on either Tinder or one of the Cupid websites:

“Hola (her name), me llamo (your name). Soy de (your country) pero voy a viajar a (her country) pronto. Voy a trabajar alli y pasar algunos  años en (her country). Me interesa conocer más personas antes de llegar. Quisiera conocerte pero no uso (dating tool) mucho. Tienes Whatsapp?”

Which translates to:

“Hi (her name), my name is (your name). I am from (your country) but I am going to travel to (her country) soon. I am going to work there and spend a few years in (her country). I am interested in knowing more people before arriving. I would like to know you but I don’t use (dating tool) much. Do you have Whatsapp?”

Now keep in mind that Whatsapp is the tool we need here. Don’t go for anything else like Skype. Whatsapp is a app that you download into your phone for free and most girls in most of Latin America will use Whatsapp for communications.

With Whatsapp, you can have international and domestic calls, video calls, texting, and video and photo sharing for free with anyone else that uses it.

So she will either give you her number or she won’t. I find that quite a few do and it doesn’t make much of a different if you talk to her first before asking for the number or not.

One thing is true though that a lot of these women get matched with plenty of men and will quickly forget about you on there and not even respond to your messages on Tinder given the options they have and how busy they might be.

So just ask for the number because most don’t put up too much resistance from what I have experienced.

Now also keep in mind that they might not put in their country area code into the phone number they give you. Depending on which country you are matching in, make sure to include her country area code into the beginning of her number when adding her.

And if you are dealing with a lot of women, you will want to put them into your phone in a way that makes it easier to remember basic information about each one when talking with them.

So I would put the girls into my phone in a order similar to the following:

(where you got her number) – (name) (age) (location)

In practice, it will look something like this:

Tinder – Karla 25 Cali, Colombia

CC – Maria 28 Panama City, Panama

Bar – Alma 23 Buenos Aires, Argentina

In the second example, CC stands for Colombian Cupid.

Now when you are dealing with these women, make sure to obviously recognize when a woman isn’t interested in you or not.

If she simply isn’t very interactive in the conversations, responds very late with very short answers or doesn’t even respond at all, stop talking with her.

Eventually you might reach the point where you have too many women in your phone and you will need to eliminate some of the ones that are not that interested in you.

That way you can focus on the women that actually are.

These will be the women that will be much more interactive and helpful in practicing Spanish and maybe even going on intimate dates with later.

And when you are talking with the women that are interested in you, I recommend you don’t tell them that you would like to “practice your Spanish.”

It’s not likely to be a big deal if you do but I personally wouldn’t do that. First, you are defining your relationship with her as something more educational than romantic or possibly sexual in the future.

You want her thinking you more as a guy she might date more romantically or get intimate with than a guy she is going to be a teacher to.

Second, this might invite her to ask you to practice English with her also. Nothing wrong with helping her if you want while she helps you but it would be better if you avoided that. Simply so you don’t spend any time speaking English and only focus on Spanish for your best benefit.

Now when you are dealing with the women that are actually into you, you will ideally be making calls with them and also video calls.

This is the practice that will help you get more accustomed to speaking and listening in Spanish.

Before you arrive to Colombia or any part of Latin America, this will be crucial in improving your Spanish so you are more ready for your time here.

On top of that, the chicks you are talking to most will also get more accustomed to listening to your foreign accent and that will help them get used to understanding what you are saying if you ever meet them in person.

So with that said, this is the practice that will help prepare you most for your trip to Colombia while still in whatever community you are in now.

And when you get to Colombia or any part of Latin America, your experience here will even prepare you more.

Time Commitment

learn Spanish & meet Colombian

Now how much time should you spend doing all of this?

Well, it depends.

First, I don’t know how much time you can realistically dedicate each day to going through your Spanish textbook and using the mentioned resources.

Some people are very busy and can’t fit in 2 hours a day.

And also it’s been a very long time since I was just learning the basics of Spanish so I might be overestimating how quickly you can cover all the essential grammar and a handful of vocabulary.

But I would say maybe 2 months of 2 hours per day of learning from the textbook should be fine?

And after those 2 months, you ideally will have covered and been exposed to all the essential grammar. From there, you simply practice it every day in the following manner:

  • With the girls you meet.
  • From writing down sentences on paper where you can practice the grammar and vocabulary.
  • Using free resources like Duolingo.

Now when it comes to the girls, I’d say spend maybe 6 months at most meeting girls on these tools but don’t use both of them at the same time.

In this case, let’s say you spend 3 months on Colombian Cupid and 3 months on Tinder Plus.

So that would be $35.99 USD for Colombian Cupid and $30 USD for Tinder Plus.

That will be a total of $65.99 USD.

Now if you are interested in using Colombian Cupid as I recommend, you can check out the website here for free first and see if you wish to pay for membership later.

I would also recommend you start with Tinder Plus and then do Colombian Cupid. The reason for this is simple.

When I used Tinder Plus, I would still get matches with women from the places I swiped in even when I wasn’t using it anymore. And Tinder doesn’t charge you to message those women.

So you are likely to get matches with some women from Colombia or wherever you swipe in even after you stop paying for Tinder Plus.

Whereas once your membership with Colombian Cupid is over, you can’t message anymore women on there unless they are paying members (which is very unlikely).

So do Tinder Plus for the first 3 months so that way you will hopefully get some extra matches on there during the next 3 months that you are using Colombian Cupid.

Now before on this website on articles like this, I recommended that you use either tool just one month ahead of your planned visit to Colombia or any other country to have women waiting for you before you arrive.

However, I am extending this to 6 months in this case because the primary goal first is to improve your Spanish as much as possible.

And so having more women to practice with will help you a bit.

Also, even though 6 months is quite a while to meet someone, I’m sure some of these women would be willing to wait that long for you if they were strongly interested in you.

Which some of them might end up like that so overall you will have more women waiting for you as well if you approach it in this manner.

But as emphasized before, the additional 5 months here of using these online tools is primarily for giving you more women to meet that you can improve your Spanish with and maybe go on dates with later when you are in her country.

Step 5: Making Use of Time Down Here

Finally, you are going to Colombia or whatever Latin American country you choose.

This step isn’t so necessary if you are only looking to improve your Spanish and don’t feel like traveling just yet.

However, if you feel like traveling, then naturally you will be spending more than $100 USD but now you can do more than just meet the chicas online.

Now you can practice your Spanish in person but also have a chance of dating them and maybe even having a good time.

At this point, you will have had at least 2 months of learning the Spanish language and 6 months at least of practicing it.

Nearly a year of getting prepared.

So you will be showing up to your Latin American country of choice.

Here’s how I would do this.

If you have a woman or two that you really like and have escalated with quite a bit over Whatsapp during the previous months to your trip, have her ready to meet you.

Whenever I was single and traveling to a new city, I would usually do this where I would have a nice woman waiting for me at the airport.

It’s a good way to start your trip anywhere and your boots on the ground running.

So out of all the women you met online, pick two of them that you really liked the most, find the most physically attractive and based on how interested they seem into you.

Based on those qualities, you will have a #1 woman that you will ask to wait for you at the airport to greet you upon arrival to her country and city.

Let her know about a week before your visit the exact day, time and airline you will be arriving with.

Now let the second woman you feel best with to know the day you are likely to arrive but not time or airline. Just tell her you haven’t bought a ticket yet but you would like to have her wait for you at the airport also.

Now if the first woman of choice decides last second she can’t make it, you will have the second one to wait for you. Simply update the second one with flight information so she knows when to arrive and at what gate.

And on the day of arrival, you simply notify the woman that is not waiting for you that your flight has been delayed and you will be showing up at another time during the night.

That way she won’t show up to the airport for no reason and also won’t show up seeing you with the other woman.

This way you have someone nice and beautiful waiting for you upon arrival to have a date with quickly and maybe even get intimate if you two are really interested in each other.

Now when it comes to time, I always recommend you spend more than just a week here. Granted, not everybody has lots of time to travel because of work and other obligations.

However, if you can allocate more time to this trip, obviously you will have more romantic success down here and also have more time to practice your Spanish with the women here and other local people.

Ideally, you can allocate a month or two or more to being down here if at all possible.

When it comes to money for your trip, it really depends on how much you are going to spend. I spend about $1,005 USD per month living in Bogota.

However, your expenses could be greater or higher – check out this article on the cost of living in Colombia that I wrote.

In short, let’s say you should save up $1,500 USD per month for the trip plus $3,000 USD more or less for additional funds in the bank in case you have an emergency.

And when it’s time for you to leave Colombia, make sure to stay in touch with the women you got most intimate with. You can stay intimate with them online and be even more intimate with them physically if you ever return to their country.

Plus, they can continue helping you with your Spanish by practicing with them over Whatsapp over the time you are back home.

Final Thoughts

learn Spanish & meet Colombian

Barranquilla

Overall, I hope this helps you get a basic idea of how to begin learning Spanish to have fun down here in Colombia or Latin America more broadly.

Looking back at my journey learning Spanish, it really didn’t improve greatly until I actually started practicing it with real Spanish speakers.

While I always got A’s in Spanish class in college, that literally doesn’t mean much because conversing in Spanish is much more difficult than taking a paper exam in a class.

In short, real world experience is what you will need to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women.

And by beginning to find people (chicas) that you can practice with while you are home, this can help you improve your Spanish to a more conversational level or maybe even higher before your trip to Latin America.

And fortunately, this is a very inexpensive way to do learn Spanish and Colombian women before you get to Latin America.

There are people who spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars in university classes or other programs to learn Spanish.

In this guide, you will be spending less than $100 USD to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women in a efficient manner before taking a trip to Colombia or Latin America.

And realistically speaking, you could probably spend even less than $50 USD if you decide to do just 3 months of either Colombian Cupid or Tinder with the textbook.

So save yourself the money from those expensive courses and learn Spanish and meet Colombian women in a way that is more time and money efficient….

And in a way that will get you on dates with very sexy Colombian or Latina women waiting to have a good date with you.

Finally, you can also check out additional resources here that I wrote about in case you would like to learn Colombian slang before your trip to Colombia.

Now if you have any questions or insight of your own regarding how to learn Spanish and meet Colombian women, let me know in the comment section or send me an email in my contact form on this website.
