- How Does Colombia’s Crime Impact the Dating Scene?
For most people who think of Colombia, they tend to think of drugs and violence. For others, they might think of the sexy women and dating scene here. But how does Colombia’s crime impact the dating scene?
While now in Colombia things are more stable than what they were some decades ago
The overall violence and insecurity in the country has generally speaking impacted the women to some degree
And possibly in ways that I don’t even understand completely because I’m not a Colombian woman and I don’t study how the violence has impacted them in a professional way
However, I have noticed a very obvious way in which the violence has impacted the woman here
And it’s something you would see also in other countries like Mexico for example
Which is that as the country is more violent, the more cautious the women are going to be obviously
Especially when it comes to going out with new people on dates
That isn’t to say that the average Colombian women is super paranoid that something is going to happen and will absolutely reject going out on dates
Or something crazy like that
Just that Colombian women are going to take more precautions and assume more things in order to be safe
Even with the younger Colombian women this is the case
Since even though Pablo Escobar and his men died in a shootout as described in this great documentary on Youtube
Or in even better detail in a great book called Killing Pablo that I recommend
You still do have instability and corruption in the country
With plenty of scammers and other criminals running out causing instability
For a quick funny story….
One time I was using Tinder in Colombia about 4 or 5 years ago
I matched with a chick who was cute and I sent her the usual message asking for her Whatsapp number
We exchange numbers and get talking on Whatsapp
However, she told me that my Spanish was so good that she doesn’t believe that I am a foreigner from the US
Because, in her words, “Americans don’t speak any Spanish.”
Now, aside from the fact that this kind of statement usually annoys me…
In part because I find a lot of Colombians to be ignorant about the US and what Americans are like
I found it odd that she was looking this deeply into my Spanish to somehow convince herself that I must be Colombian
Or, as she put it, “possibly some Venezuelan guy”
Which sort of illustrates how some Colombians view Venezuelans with great distrust as being criminals and other bad things
Especially as more and more Venezuelans enter Colombia to escape their country
But that’s a different story as I explained in another article on this website
In the end, she refused to go out on a date with me in part because she assumed I was a Colombian or Venezuelan trying to trick her into showing up somewhere
Where then theoretically I would kidnap her or something
Because how could any American speak Spanish ever? That doesn’t happen right?
Right?
….Despite the US now having more Spanish speakers than any other country in the world except for Mexico
But that’s another story
Anyway, this isn’t actually the first time a Colombian chick assumed I must be Colombian for my Spanish over Whatsapp
Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to prove that I was American to the chick in this story because she just blocked me right away before I could do anything
And I was just mostly finding it funny the assumptions she was making about me
Otherwise I would have spent the time quickly to send her a photo or maybe a voice message so she could hear my accent
Regardless, this type of incident is very rare. Happened maybe once a year while I was using Tinder back then
But it does show something about how cautious Colombian women can be and how they sometimes look into the details to look for any red flags
How About Going Out At Night?
Additionally, you are going to find that the women are a bit cautious also when it comes to going out at night.
In part because they are scared something could happen or they could be kidnapped or killed
It’ll also happen for some chicks to bring their friend along “just to be safe” even if they didn’t tell you ahead of time someone else was coming to the date
Furthermore, if she does agree to go out at night with you, it’s not uncommon either for her to insist that you both go in thesame taxi
Because the taxi driver is someone unknown who could be a threat
Perhaps he will take her somewhere and try to rape her or whatever else
Which does happen occasionally where women in Colombia can be taken by a taxi driver and raped and killed somewhere
It’s not just because she wants you to cover the taxi cost
She also wants the extra security of having a man there to protect her if something bad happens
All of which illustrates how Colombia’s crime impact the dating scene here
Finally, it is also important to mention that girls in some parts of Colombia are going to be more open to going out at night then in other parts.
For example, in Bogota, the women are much more open to this than in the rest of the country
Same for Medellin and Cartagena
Otherwise, in the rest of the country, women are going to be more cautious because of the insecurity that happens
And also because some of them just live with their parents still and the parents will insist that they can’t leave at night
Which is much more common for Colombian women who live in smaller cities like Popayán
So what should you do if you want to take a Colombian woman out at night for some fun?
Well, first spending time in a city like Bogota would be better because women are a little more trustful and willing in placeslike that
On top of that, of course you got a decent amount of women who are alright with leaving at night with some new guy for the first date
Just that quite a few women on the other hand won’t do that
And for those women who are more cautious, you are going to want them to get to know you more first
So that way they feel comfortable
Which could mean sharing a lot on Whatsapp by sharing photos, doing video calls and sending voice messages
It also means that going out at night will be a lot easier on a later date like the 2nd or 3rd date
Which isn’t bad – just a little more waiting to go out at night
Essentially, the more comfortable she feels with you, the better your chances of going out at night.
