- Enjoy the Cartagena Film Festival with Your Colombian Girl
In Colombia, there are various events that you can go to with your Colombian partner on a date.
As I have written about here, you can take your Colombian partner to a finca for example!
Or you can take your Colombian girl to any of the beautiful beaches that Colombia has to offer as I wrote about here
But while those places are great for enjoying all the natural scenery down here….
What about if you want to enjoy some of the best cultural offerings of Colombia alone, with some friends or with a girl you got down here?
Well, fortunately for you, Colombia has an amazing culture that you can enjoy anywhere in this country
For example, the Caribbean Coast of Colombia has plenty of amazing cultural events to enjoy such as the Barranquilla Carnival
Which, as I wrote here in this article, is one of the biggest carnivals in the world and is a great event to enjoy Colombia’s culture
But perhaps you want something more calm than a carnival
Maybe you would like to enjoy and learn more about Latin American cinema for example
And it’s importance in Colombian culture
If that is the case, then you should check out the Cartagena Film Festival!
But what is this event and why should you attend it?
What the Cartagena Film Festival is
Founded in 1959 by a director named Victor Nieto, the Cartagena Film Festival is the oldest cinema event in Latin America.
Held in Cartagena in the days between February and March of every year, you can enjoy the numerous Latin American films and television shows that are presented at this event.
One of the intended goals of the event is to promote the distribution of Latin American films throughout Latin America. This helps talented directors and good films reach a broader audience.
Additionally, this event also helps improve Colombian film production due to the collaboration with workshops and forums that take place in the event for those interested in working in the Colombian cinema field.
This allows for a new generation of Colombian and Latino film directors to get practical experience.
And of course, the broader public, including you, can enjoy all of the screenings that happen during this event. You will find there to be more or less around 140 films presented during the festival.
You can enjoy the screenings of these films and also the competition that is held among Latin American short films and videos at this event. Some of the best film winners in the past included Cocote by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, Aquarius by Kleber Mendonça Filho and more.
It is by far one of the best (if not the best) Latin American cinema events that you can find down here. If you are into cinema and want to know more about Latin American cinema, then you should definitely enjoy this event.
It can be a great learning experience to Colombian culture and can also be a great experience to enjoy with some friends or your Colombian partner.
Personal Experience
A while ago, I visited this event with my Colombian girlfriend as we were traveling to Colombia.
Every year, we tend to travel around Colombia to enjoy something new and unique in this great country.
Having never enjoyed the Cartagena Film Festival before, I really wanted to see what it was like since it was different.
And to my girlfriend, it was new to her also. She rarely goes to the Caribbean Coast and so never been to this event before.
Anyway, we showed up and go to see what it was like.
And keep in mind that I’m not that overly interested in cinema in general.
But regardless, I definitely found this event to be enjoyable and worth the visit.
When we showed up to Cartagena, they had free screenings of cinema presented in the city for us to enjoy. At one event, we sat down and enjoyed a film that was being presented.
One cool thing that we really liked about this event was not only that it was free for us to enjoy…
But also that they had a wide variety of film screenings from numerous countries in Latin America.
On top of that, it was a well attended event when we went. We actually met some cool folks while at this event. Some from Colombia and others mostly from other Latin American countries like Argentina for example. So if you want to meet some cool people also and maybe make some friends, it’s a decent event for that in my experience.
So it’s not just an event to enjoy Colombian culture and cinema but more broadly Latin American culture and cinema.
If you are into cinema a lot more than me, then this event would be worth it for the trip to Cartagena alone.
However, keep in mind that Cartagena and the Caribbean Coast has plenty to offer! So you can enjoy this event while also enjoying nearby beaches, beautiful architecture, amazing nightlife and more in this area.
So for us, it was definitely worth the visit as we both greatly enjoyed this event and the broader trip!

Final Thoughts
By far, this event was worth it!
There isn’t much more to say other than you should enjoy it if you happen to be in Colombia or the Caribbean Coast near March.
And keep in mind that the Barranquilla Carnival happens in Spring also so you can enjoy both events if you are spending a month or two in the Caribbean coast during the Spring.
So why not show up to the Caribbean Coast during that time and enjoy both of these amazing events?
