- 10 Reasons Why Medellin is Overrated
Despite Medellin being one of the more popular cities in Colombia, I often find it to be true that Medellin is overrated
Every year you have more and more Americans, Canadians, Europeans and other foreigners coming to Medellin
In large part because of the reputation that this city has for being a great place to party and have sex with Colombian women
I remember one time when I was traveling throughout South America and was in Peru where I was headed to Machu Picchu by a bus from Bolivia
And had to stop at some government building to get my passport stamped and allowed into the country
While in line, there was another American in front of me – a young guy in his early to mid 20s
And he told me about his travel plans through South America at the time
And how he stopped in Medellin – he had plans to see other parts of Colombia but never left Medellin
Because of “how it cool it was bro, so many drugs and hot women”
Even though I’m sure Medellin was a good experience for him….
He unfortunately never realized that the rest of Colombia also has “drugs and hot women” if that is what he is looking for
Not to mention all the other great things the rest of the country has from great restaurants to amazing beaches and other touristy areas
But regardless, he was one of many other foreigners I have met who come to believe that the only part of Colombia worth visiting is Medellin
And unfortunately, they are missing out on quite a bit as the rest of Colombia offers quite a bit and also Medellin is overrated from my experience
And here’s why Medellin is overrated
First: Riding the Wave of its Legacy
In the 90s, Medellin had a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in the world
And back then, there wasn’t too many foreigners going to visit Medellin
However, there were some
And others also who came some odd years after in the early to mid 2000s
And what they all reported was a city where the women were insanely sexy and also very easy to have sex with
Mixed in with a great environment for partying and doing drugs
On top of that, you could tell others how exciting your life was by visiting a city with such a dangerous reputation
Put it all together, Medellin over the years developed a reputation for being this crazy place with danger, excitement, sexy women who were easy to have sex with, drugs and cheap alcohol
Now, it’s nothing like that
Not as dangerous as it was before, much more costly with less excitement, and the women are not as easy as before while the rest of Colombia also has sex women also
So in short, Medellin is still riding on the wave of its legacy and slowly people are learning that it Medellin is overrated
It will take time – but eventually more and more people will learn the truth and go to other parts of Colombia where the prices for everything is lower and the women are also very sexy
Second: More Materialistic and Classist
As described in another article on this website, Colombian women tend to have a reputation for being materialistic and classist
However, if we are being honest, that depends on where you are in Colombia as this characteristic of their women tends to vary by where you are
For example, the women in Medellin are some of the most materialistic and classist women I have met in all of Colombia
So if you are wishing to avoid women like this, it will be harder in Medellin
Third: The Paisa Women Have Bigger Egos
Women in Medellin tend to have some of the biggest egos also in Colombia
Much more so than the women in any other Colombian city from what I have seen
And this is because they know of the reputation that they have for being “the sexiest” women in Colombia
All the Colombians are saying it and endless amounts of foreigners are saying it with their words and their money as they spend over a thousand dollars and more to travel and live in Colombia just to have sex and party
As this reputation as developed and gotten bigger over the years, so has the egos of the paisa women
Fourth: Relatively Overpriced
When compared to the US, Medellin is still a little bit cheaper than what you would pay in the US
However, when compared to the rest of Colombia, Medellin is considerably overpriced in my opinion
It’s just not worth the money – even though the city is relatively nice as well, it’s not worth what you are paying since most of the price increase comes from the fact that this city is very touristy
And the foreigners living here are driving up the prices considerably
Fifth: Treated like an ATM Machine
As said elsewhere on this website, it is common enough for Colombians to treat all foreigners like walking ATM machines
For some Colombians, that is exactly how they see us and nothing more – all they want from you is money falling into their hands
Nothing less, nothing more
Now, having said that, it also again depends on where you are
Since Colombians in other parts of the country – like Valledupar, Bucaramanga, Popayán, etc – tend to treat foreigners a bit nicer and with more respect
In Medellin, on the other hand, it’s much worse
And this is one of those cities in Colombia where it is much more common to be treated like a walking ATM machine in large part because of the materialistic culture in the city mixed in with the high degree of tourism
Sixth: Sex Tourist Stereotype
Because of the history of this city being flooded with sex tourists, foreigners have gotten a bad reputation here
Where Colombians in Medellin will see a foreigner walking down the street with a girl and immediately think that she is a prostitute and he is a sex tourist
Which, by the way, hurts your chances with the women here to a degree because that sterotype is well known and they don’t want to be perceived badly
And also because so many women have had sex with foreigners who just used them for sex and then left the next day
Which, over time, has caused just a little bit of resentment by the women here
Though, to be fair, more women don’t have negative feelings regarding this issue – some do and it’s common enough that it’s annoying to encounter when you see it
Seventh: Arrogance
It is common enough for people in Medellin to think that their city is the center of the universe
While having spent time here, I noticed that people in Medellin often cared very little about anything outside their city
And I’m not just talking about other countries because I also mean other Colombian cities as well
Quite a few people in Medellin consider the rest of Colombia to be a terrible place not even worth thinking about and that their city is the only good city in the country
And of course, when you do meet a Colombian girl here and you want to tell her about your country, I’d say good luck
Most don’t care about your country or its culture even if you show interest in hers by asking her questions and of course by showing up to Medellin, Colombia
This level of arrogance can be a little bit annoying when people in Medellin say that their city is the best city in the world
Which is ignoring quite a few cities in the world from New York City to Shanghai
And of course, what would the rest of Latin America say? With Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Havana and more
Even in just a Latin American context, most people would agree that Medellin is not the best city
And even in a Colombian context, it’s questionable as Bogota is quite a nice city also in my opinion
So why is it that people in Medellin are so confident about how amazing Medellin is?
Arrogance
Eighth: People Are Not as Friendly & Warm
Compared to Bogota, it’s questionable if the women and the general population in Medellin is friendlier and warmer
However, compared to the rest of Colombia outside of those two cities, there is no doubt that the women and the general population is friendlier and warmer in the rest of Colombia than in Medellin
For all of the reasons mentioned above, the people in Medellin tend to not be as friendly to outsiders in general
Which also means that it is harder to make friends in this city and really experience the culture of Colombia in general
For enjoying the culture and the warmth and friendship of the Colombian people, you’d be better off in a city like Pereira, Cali or Barranquilla
Ninth: Plenty of Sexy Women in the Rest of Colombia
I’m not going to pretend and say that none of you are interested in the women in Colombia
I get it – they are quite sexy when compared to women in other countries and you want to enjoy that aspect of Colombia
And while the women in Medellin are some of the more attractive women in the country, you can easily get very attractive women in the rest of Colombia
For example, the women in Pereira and Manizales are also very attractive
The women in Cali and Barranquilla are also very sexy as well
Among so many other cities – the women in Medellin really are not that special when you consider how many beautiful women exist in the rest of the country
On that same note, the sexy women in the rest of the country are also even easier than the women in Medellin usually
Depends on where you are but in the bigger cities like Barranquilla, Bogota, Pereira, Cali or Manizales for example – you can find very beautiful women who are easier than the women in Medellin
Suffice to say, when most of larger cities in the country has very sexy women who are not too difficult, you are not going to be unhappy outside of Medellin
And honestly you are not missing out on too much by spending more time in other Colombian cities when it comes to finding sexy women
So if you are interested in checking out those other cities, make sure to use Avianca Airlines since it has plenty of trips available throughout Latin America
Tenth: Finding Love
Outside of casual sex, I also know that plenty of you are interested in settling down someday and finding someone to spend your life with
And as written about before, Medellin is overrated in terms of casual sex when compared to other Colombian cities
In part because of the issues mentioned above and also because of issues surrounding fidelity with the women here
So while you can find a woman here who is faithful and would make a great wife and mother of your kids, I’m just not recommending that you come to this city for that purpose as Medellin is overrated in that regard
As you will have a much easier time finding a high quality woman outside of Medellin
When it comes to anything regarding finding a high quality woman who can be a good wife and mother of your kids, Medellin simply is not worth the effort
Ending on a Positive Note
Given that this article focuses on a lot of the negatives of Medellin, I think it’s important to end on a high note
Even though Medellin is quite overrated and not the best city in Colombia with all its faults, it’s still definitely a good city overall and one of the best cities in Colombia when it comes to quality of life
After all, the city is relatively safer, it’s still fairly priced compared to cities in the US or Canada, it has a great climate and isvery green and clean…
It also has plenty of tourism opportunities with a decent nightlife and good restaurants
And when it comes to raising a family, it also has decent healthcare and educational opportunities when compared to the rest of Colombia
With a better public transportation system also by the way
So in the end, I don’t want to say that Medellin is a terrible city – as said, it’s one of the best ones when it comes to overallliving
But, it is also one of the most overrated cities as it comes with a lot of negatives as well
Hopefully, this article helps you understand Medellin in a more nuanced way
